2021 May 7The Sri Lanka Veterinary Association (SLVA) celebrated World Veterinary Day on April 24th, 2021, at Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. Established in 2001 by the World Veterinary Association, World Veterinary Day has been instrumental in promoting the veterinary profession and the development of more sustainable animal husbandry practices, improving not only the health of animals, but also the health and wellbeing of people and the environment. Over the years, the themes have focused on pivotal issues, spearheading programmes on Rabies prevention and eradication, antimicrobial resistance, diversity of the veterinary profession and the One Health concept. The Magazine will feature a miscellany of topics including the history of the veterinary profession, companion and farm animal sectors, veterinary pharmaceuticals and more. The establishment of the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association’s platform on Public Communication was another milestone project created to amplify the Voice of Veterinarians in Sri Lanka.

State Minister of Epidemiology and COVID Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle states that the country could be locked down in the future if necessary. “In the face of Covid, epidemiological decisions are made, not political. In accordance with the government’s decision, all Catholic schools across the country will also remain closed until further notice, the Bishop’s House has announced. Earlier today (May 07), Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris stated that all schools, pre-schools, universities and tuition classes be closed until further notice, due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country. On April 27, an announcement from the Education Minister stated that all schools across the country will be closed until the April 30 due to the recent upsurge in COVID-19 figures. However, reopening of schools was then postponed until today as the country has been seeing a consecutive increase in virus infections following the Sinhala and Tamil New Year last month.

The State Minister for Covid Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle stated that a consignment of 05 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine is to be imported to Sri Lanka. Currently, the only vaccines being administered to Sri Lankan locals are the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Sputnik vaccine while the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine has been administered to Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had an online meeting today (7). According to the President’s Twitter handle, Dr. Tedros had mentioned that approval would be granted for the emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine in another two to three days. The President stated that once this approval comes through, Sri Lanka will be able to start vaccinating citizens with the available stock of 600,000 Sinopahrm vaccines. During the meeting, Dr Tedros had commended Sri Lanka’s control of the pandemic throughout the first wave and was hopeful that the current surge in affected persons would soon be brought under control. President Gotabaya had also expressed his appreciation of the support provided to Sri Lanka by the WHO.

The United National Party has raised concerns over the availability of PCR tests in the country. Speaking to the media, UNP General-Secretary, Palitha Range Bandara questioned the Government on the allegations that the health authorities have run out of PCR testing kits for the next week. “The Government must confirm or deny the rumors that claim there is a shortage of PCR testing kits in the country. If this is correct, how do the authorities plan to rectify this issue and how soon can new testing kits be deployed. If this allegation is false, the Government must state how many kits are available in the country and whether orders have been placed for new testing kits,” he said.

Steps will be taken to provide Cabinet approved relief to the dependents of war heroes, who died or were disabled due to terrorist activities, with effect from April 2021, says the President’s Media Division (PMD). The two Cabinet memoranda submitted by the President with seven proposals to provide relief to war heroes were approved by the Cabinet at its meeting held on 27 April. The President has instructed the Ministry of Defence to take steps to pay the proposed relief from the date of approval. The lifetime salaries and allowances of the members of Armed Forces / Police who were disabled due to terrorist activities would be paid to their dependents following the death of disabled members. Accordingly, their salaries and allowances entitled up to the age of 55 will be paid to their dependents.

In response, Mr Duterte said China should in future only send Sinovac vaccines – a separate Chinese vaccine which is in use in the Philippines. 669 persons have been given the Russian manufactured Sputnik-V vaccine doses yesterday (7). The inoculation of the Sputnik-V vaccine to residents of Gothatuwa began yesterday with State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Channa Jayasumana stating that doses will be administered to residents who are between the ages of 30 and 60. A stock of 15,000 doses of the Russian manufactured Sputnik-V vaccine arrived in the island on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 17,249 persons were given the second dose of the Astra-Zeneca COVIShield vaccine in the country yesterday. Accordingly, 174,800 persons have been fully vaccinated in Sri Lanka thus far.
