The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has called on authorities to clarify the fate of an army officer who has been detained since February 2024. The institution said it had received a complaint from the family of Col Abdulrahman al-Tuwati, who was reportedly arrested outside his home in the eastern city of Bayda by an unidentified group. According to the complaint, a source later informed the family that he was being held in Qarnada military prison in eastern Libya and that his health had deteriorated due to illness. The institution said it had submitted a report to the office of Libya’s attorney general requesting an investigation into the circumstances of the case. It said the allegations indicated possible arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, calling for authorities to reveal Tuwati’s fate and release him without conditions if he is being held unlawfully.
