Cumberland Council reveals August bank holiday arrangements
However, the permit helpline will be closed on both the bank holiday and the weekend. The council says residential and home care services will continue to operate around the clock. Adult Social Care offices will be closed on Monday, but the social care out of hours emergency service (01228 526690) will be available for emergencies. The Archive Centres in Carlisle and Whitehaven, together with all libraries, will also be closed on the bank holiday Monday. Residents are advised to check the Better website for information on leisure centre opening times over the bank holiday weekend.

Royal Navy gets its first Hindu chaplain
The UK's Royal Navy has appointed Bhanu Attri as its first-ever Hindu chaplain. Attri, a Hindu priest with decades of experience running a Hindu temple in London, will also offer Hindu prayer ceremonies for Hindus.There are around 40 Hindu personnel serving full-time in the Royal Navy, plus another 30 in the Maritime Reserves. “The chance to represent individuals from other diverse religions brings meaningful representation for the Hindu community and reflects the Navy’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and spiritual care for all. My family feels immense pride.”Anil Bhanot, Hindu adviser to the ministry of defence (MoD), said: “In 2023 the Royal Navy created a position for a Hindu chaplain and I endorsed Pandit Bhanu Prakash Attri for best fitting the criteria. By KELVIN CHAN, Associated Press Business WriterLONDON (AP) — Britain abandoned its demand that Apple provide so-called backdoor access to any encrypted user data stored in the cloud, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Monday. “As a result, the UK agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a ‘back door’ that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties,” she said. Apple challenged the order, which raised fears of electronic spying by national security officials. “We will always take all actions necessary at the domestic level to keep UK citizens safe.”Gabbard previously said a demand for backdoor access would violate the rights of Americans and raise concerns about a foreign government pressuring a U.S.-based technology company. The opt-in feature protects iCloud files, photos, notes and other data with end-to-end encryption when they are stored in the cloud.

Most millionaires think they’d be better off outside the UK
Some 60 per cent of millionaires living in Britain believe that life would be better abroad, according to new research. A survey of 1,000 of the nation’s wealthiest also found that 53 per cent would be more likely to leave the UK if Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, pressed ahead with a wealth tax. The migration consultancy Arton Capital, which commissioned the study, said it showed that Britain was at a “tipping point”. Armand Arton, the chief executive, said: “The uncertainty around the government’s proposed wealth tax mirrors the ongoing economic uncertainty seen around the world. Most asylum seekers have been barred from working in Britain since the early 2000s, and as a result, the government must give them accommodation unless they have significant funds or housing from family and friends. The Conservative government moved asylum seekers out of crowded housing and into hotels because of social distancing rules, and also paused the evictions following asylum decisions.
