Nursing course acceptances stagnate across UK, data shows
The government has been urged to step up efforts to attract more people into nursing, after new figures revealed little growth in the number of students accepted onto courses across the UK. Just 40 of these additional places went to UK students, with the remainder taken by overseas applicants. Acceptances among 18-year-olds rose by 6% to 5,620 – the highest since 2019 – but mature student numbers continued to decline. “We now need to see the government prioritise getting more students to choose nursing in the first place. “Nursing and other allied health professions are suffering falling application rates and limited placements at NHS trusts.

Law Firms That Settled With Trump Are Asked to Help on Trade Deals

In total, the firms pledged nearly a billion dollars in pro bono legal work. The deals have been criticized by many in the legal community as unconstitutional and undemocratic, and have led to splits inside some of the firms about the wisdom of agreeing to terms with the White House.

Guj man staying illegally in UK on fake Portuguese passport deported to Mumbai
Mumbai: A man from Rajkot, Priyankrai Savalia (42), was deported to Mumbai International Airport from London on Aug 13, and handed over to the Sahar police for residing illegally in London since 2019. UK authorities discovered he had been using a Portuguese passport obtained with fake documents and a false name. They deported him back in 2018 to Mumbai for overstay. However, Savalia claimed he was seeking opportunity to return," said a police officer of the Sahar police station.Despite being deported in 2018, Savalia managed to fly to Germany and then to Spain. "In Spain, he managed to get Portugal passport using fake documents and changed his name to Bankimbhai Bijiabhai.He used it to fly to the UK.

Luke Littler schedule and TV times for New Zealand Darts Masters
The 18-year-old was well below-par again at the Spark Arena in Auckland this morning before getting over the top of New Zealand number two Mark Cleaver 6-4. This allowed Cleaver to cut the gap to 3-2 and he missed the bull to level the match, with Littler taking out tops-tops. Credit Littler for not panicking though, he stayed composed, tidied up his act and crossed the line with two 13-dart legs. Like last week though, he will need to be much better tomorrow if he is to stand a chance of winning the New Zealand Masters for the first time. The New Zealand Darts Masters is being broadcast live on PDCTV and ITVX, with delayed coverage on ITV4 beginning from 7pm (UK time) on Friday and 5pm (UK time) on Saturday.

Russia Seeks to Add Trade and Arms Control Into Trump-Putin Talks
A day ahead of the meeting between President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, the Kremlin on Thursday signaled that apart from Ukraine, it was also interested in discussing other subjects, like economic links and nuclear arms. Remarks by Mr. Putin and his foreign policy aide highlighted how, when dealing with Washington, Moscow has tried to dilute discussions about ending the fighting in Ukraine by packaging them together with other bilateral issues. In particular, Russia has focused on the prospect of discussing arms control and restoring economic ties with the United States. On Thursday, Mr. Putin convened top officials at the Kremlin to brief them about the next day’s meeting. In his opening remarks, Mr. Putin said he believed that the United States was making “quite energetic efforts to stop the fighting, end the crisis, and reach agreements of interest to all parties involved in this conflict.”He added that an agreement on Ukraine “would create long-term conditions of peace between our countries, in Europe, and in the world as a whole, if we reach agreements in the next stages in the field of strategic offensive arms control.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine was returning from the front line last week when he joined a pivotal call with President Trump. Hours earlier, Mr. Zelensky had visited soldiers defending Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region against Russian ground assaults. Seeing a chance to broker peace, Mr. Trump told those on the line that he would meet one on one with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to try to seal an agreement. It was a direct challenge to Ukraine’s core principles that territorial issues be addressed only after a cease-fire and that no deal be concluded without Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Thursday, exchanging a handshake and a warm embrace before heading inside for talks.This high profile meeting comes just a day before a key US-Russia summit in Alaska that could affect the Kyiv-Moscow conflict, as a show of strong support as Ukraine and its European allies are being left out of the upcoming US-Russia summit.Zelenskyy’s visit to the British capital follows his participation in virtual talks from Berlin on Wednesday with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders.The leaders said that Trump had assured them that he would prioritise efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage on Friday.Both Zelenskyy and European leaders have voiced concerns that the bilateral US-Russia summit could sideline their interests, potentially producing outcomes favourable to Moscow. With Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine now in its fourth year, they fear any agreement could undermine Europe’s security.Earlier on Wednesday, Starmer had described the Alaska summit as “hugely important” and potentially a “viable” route to a ceasefire. I am grateful for the support. We share the same view on the need for a truly lasting peace for Ukraine and on the danger of Russia's plan to reduce everything to discussing the impossible. "He had also highlighted that any decisions made without Ukraine's involvement would be “decisions against peace.”

The US Vice President is holidaying in Dean Manor in the Cotswolds, about a mile away from Diddly Squat Farm. Mr Clarkson, meanwhile, bought Diddly Squat Farm in Chadlington, just outside of Chipping Norton. On the 1,000 acre farm he runs his farm shop, which has proved hugely popular with viewers of hit Amazon Prime show Clarkson's Farm. However, Mr Vance chose a different farm shop in the area to visit which was Daylesford Organic farm shop, near Kingham. UK prices for weight-loss jab jump by up to 170pc after Trump demands
Clinics are able to set their own prices for the jab, although the cost for patients is likely to increase in line with the higher list price. It comes just days after the US president demanded that drugmakers lower prices for American patients. In the letter, he said “increased revenues abroad must be repatriated to lower drug prices for American patients and taxpayers”. The UK has been seen as a potential target for these increases, given the NHS has a reputation for being among the toughest negotiators on drug prices. The requirements are lower for private patients, with people eligible if they have a BMI of 30 or above.

Mr Trump has threatened Russia with "severe consequences" if a ceasefire is rejected by its leader. On Saturday, Mr Zelensky rejected any proposal that would compromise Ukraine's territorial integrity, something that is forbidden by the country's constitution.
