He told the Daily Telegraph that he was leaving because of the constant drip feed of leaks about tax policies ahead of the Budget — including a possible exit tax — which meant it was “too unstable and too risky to maintain residency”. Furthermore, last year’s Budget measures, including changes to capital gains tax, entrepreneur's relief, and employer national insurance, have increased costs for many entrepreneurs. As the govt prepares for this year’s Budget, it must carefully consider the cumulative impact of these policies. I am not seeing improvements to the NHS, economic growth or investment in infrastructure,” Bhat said. He said several of his PIO friends, who had lived in the UK for years, like him, had already returned to India.

Over the past couple of decades a global boom in watch sales has transformed timepieces into a mobile asset class. New-gen microbrands have been creating original, almost exclusively mechanical watches that combine imagination with accessibility. Andrew McUtchen, an Australian watch journalist who launched Time+Tide in 2014, a digital channel covering all things watches, has long been aware of the trend. “We had a column called Micro Mondays,” he says, which was all about these ventures. We even helped a few get their Kickstarters off the ground.”A decade later, McUtchen is not only writing about these independents, he’s representing them.

The British government on Wednesday proposed legislation that would make it illegal to resell tickets for entertainment and sports events for more than their original face value. According to a government news release, the proposed rules would reduce the average cost of resold tickets in Britain by 37 pounds (about $49), and save consumers there an estimated £112 million ($147 million) a year. The rules would also make it easier for actual, human fans — not scalpers or the automated bots they use — to get the tickets they want, the government said. “For too long, ticket touts have ripped off fans, using bots to snap up batches of tickets and resell them at sky-high prices,” Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, said in a statement. “Our new proposals will shut down the touts’ racket and make world-class music, comedy, theater and sport affordable for everyone.”

Abortion should be allowed on demand up to birth, a Scottish Government-commissioned report has recommended. The Abortion Law Review Expert Group called for abortion to be allowed beyond 24 weeks gestation for almost any reason, for decriminalisation of abortion, and for abortion to be recognised as a right for “all pregnant people” in Scotland. Among other controversial recommendations, the group opposed mandatory counselling, stronger protections against coercion, and a prohibition on sex-selective abortion. The report’s recommendations are reckless and must be rejected.”Sex-selective abortionCriticism reported in the press was particularly levelled at the Committee’s recommendation that “no specific reference is made to sex-selective abortion within any updated abortion legislation”. WestminsterAt Westminster recently, abortion decriminalisation was debated in the House of Lords during scrutiny of the Crime and Policing Bill.

President Trump assailed an American journalist in the Oval Office on Tuesday for asking Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, about the violent death of a Washington Post columnist at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. U.S. intelligence has said the attack was carried out on the prince’s orders. “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that,” Mr. Trump told the journalist, Mary Bruce of ABC News, later referring to her query as “a horrible, insubordinate, and just a terrible question.”“A lot of people didn’t like that gentleman that you’re talking about,” Mr. Trump said, referring to the murdered journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. “Whether you like him or didn’t like him, things happen.” The prince has denied involvement in the killing. It was the second time in a week that Mr. Trump had leveled a fierce insult at a woman who was covering him.

“Major links” already exist between Russell Group and German universities, the university association, said, citing “strategic partnerships, joint research centres, exchange programmes and joint training”. To strengthen links between the UK and Germany, the Russell Group said, greater support should be provided for joint PhD and postdoctoral programmes. Agreements between UK and German research and innovation funders, meanwhile, should be developed to “cut red tape”. Tackling data governance and exchange barriers and improving coordination, the Russell Group said, “would further reduce friction and help projects move faster from idea to impact”. Action on issues such as joint PhD programmes will ensure we maximise the value of UK-Germany university links.”emily.dixon@timeshighereducation.com
