It was clear to me that the arrival of the global economy had created a pervasive sense of insecurity and disempowerment. In almost every country, educational systems have been shifted towards training students for the skills needed by the corporate world. In the global North, rural areas have been similarly hollowed out by global economic forces. Since food is something that everyone, everywhere, needs every day, a key focus should be on rebuilding the local food economy. The rise of authoritarianism is just one of many interrelated impacts of economic globalization.

Canadian judge, senator and Indigenous reformer Murray Sinclair dies aged 73 – The GuardianNovember 4, 2024Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe judge, senator and university chancellor, who reshaped Canada’s legal system and forced the public to confront the brutal realities of the Indigenous residential school system, has died at the age of 73. Sinclair – whose spirit name was Mizhana Gheezhik, meaning “The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky” – was a champion of Indigenous rights and reconciliation efforts, dedicating his life to reversing the stark inequties many Indigenous communities face as the result of colonial policy. Sinclair, Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge, chaired Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which spent six years compiling testimony from survivors of horrific abuses at the country’s residential school system and concluded that Canada had carried out a policy of “cultural genocide”. Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Sympathy seems to be aligning with the farming community but small and medium-sized family businesses, which face a similar dilemma, seem to have been forgotten, despite being significant innovators and employers. I am the major shareholder and chairman of a successful group of family companies that have been passed down through five generations without the burden of inheritance tax, allowing them to be nurtured and improved, and providing jobs and incomes for hundreds of staff and their families as well as my three sons, who have joined the business. The staff and the companies have paid countless millions of pounds in tax over the years, providing the government with a stable source of income. We are a UK manufacturer, exporting to

The New York Times Tech Guild, which represents hundreds of the outlet’s tech staff workers, went on strike on Monday morning – one day before the US presidential election. The threat of a strike has existed within the company for months, raising questions over a potential disruption of election coverage. The Tech Guild called the strike after increasingly intense negotiations between the guild and Times management failed to yield a contract agreement. Kait Hoehne, Times senior software engineer and Tech Guild member, said the group was hoping to avoid a strike as negotiations had continued into late Sunday night. But tech workers were ultimately left feeling they had no other option after the management’s failure to agree on key issues, the Washington Post reported.

Bridget Phillipson said increasing the £9,250 maximum tuition fees for domestic students to £9,535 next year had “not been an easy decision”. University tuition fees will rise for the first time in eight years to help universities facing “severe financial challenges”, the Education Secretary said. The previous government raised the cap on university tuition fees in England to £9,000 per year in 2012, but it has been frozen at £9,250 for domestic undergraduate students since 2017. University tuition fees will rise in line with inflation, by 3.1%, and the changes will come into effect from the 2025/26 academic year. Following the announcement on Monday, Jo Grady, general secretary of the UCU, said the hike to tuition fees was “both economically and morally wrong”.

It is hard to rank Quincy Jones’s work because it stretched over such a wide range. Comparing the pop innocence of, say, his production of Lesley Gore’s It’s My Party with the dirty funk of Jones’s own Cool Joe, Mean Joe (Killer Joe) is a fool’s errand. What really shines through, though, is his way of masking any complexities under a carapace of the things that make music flow by yet stick in the mind: tunefulness, grooviness, something unique to make it stand out. With that in mind, here are ten of the best, spanning the length and breadth of his varied career. Jones threw himself into disco funk abandon with a surprise cover of a song by the British singer Chaz Jankel, former member
