Industry Insight: Searchlight's $3.3M opening on 1,925 screens demonstrates specialty theatrical viability at scale between arthouse (<500 screens) and wide release (3,000+), as Fraser's Oscar credibility provides theatrical hook streaming lacks while mid-budget permits profitability at modest gross. Consumer Insight: Audiences respond to Fraser's "residual affection" (comeback narrative, Oscar validation, earnest screen presence) making him theatrical draw for feel-good material—post-Whalegoodwill converts to ticket sales for similar emotional territory. Brand Insight: "Rental family" premise combines cultural novelty (Western audiences unfamiliar with Japanese practice) with universal theme (loneliness, connection desire), allowing Hikari to explore specific culture through accessible emotional framework avoiding documentary distancing.

The head of Generation Rent says the threat of landlords quitting the sector “should be taken with a large pinch of salt”. The comment comes in a Guardian article looking chiefly at the 2% tax rise on rental income imposed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in November’s Budget. Ben Twomey, chief executive of Generation Rent, says most landlords are able to absorb an increase in tax. He adds: “Regardless of costs, landlords find it all too easy to raise rents anyway when wages are rising and building new homes slows down. The Guardian – not known for its support for landlords in the past – cites one for whom the Reeves increase will cost £2,500 a year.

2025 was a brilliant year for high income dividend shares. Legal & General, M&G and Phoenix all had solid track records of maintaining or growing dividends and strong Solvency II ratios, signalling capital strength. Even so, M&G’s forecast to yield 7.18% in 2026, Phoenix around 7.7%, and Legal & General an impressive 8.33%. However, M&G, Legal & General and Phoenix would all suffer in a stock market crash. If we do get another year of steady gains, those once-in-a-decade yields may be gone for good.

At the end of December 2025, something happened in Denmark that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. The state-owned postal service PostNord delivered its last letter, bringing to a close the history of an institution that had been operating continuously since 1624. Denmark was the first country in the world to completely abandon its national universal letter delivery service. Maintaining an extensive delivery network for around 110 million letters per year, down from over a billion in previous decades, simply ceased to be profitable. The story of the Danish postal service, which closed after 401 years of operation, has a touch of melancholy and a poetic ending.
