"You can find some of the most effective snail deterrents in your kitchen - salt, coffee grounds and eggshells are all great for keeping the slugs at bay. Slugs can be harmful to garden plants (Image: Getty Images)How people can use coffee grounds in gardens to deter slugsAs Chris explains: "Sprinkling coffee grounds around your plant is an effective way to deter slugs and snails as they don’t like the strong aroma and the texture is also unpleasant for them to crawl over. Laura Harnett, founder of plastic-free cleaning brand Seep, concurred, adding: “Coffee grounds do deter slugs due to the smell and their gritty texture. However, caution has also been urged around this method to keep slugs away. But there are special dates during the year it’s worth waiting for to save £100s on pricey upgrades for everything from iPhones to Sky renewals. Whenever a new iPhone model is launched, the previous generation gets a decent price reduction of about £100. So it’s well worth waiting until after the January launch. AdvertisementThis includes the Amazon Fire Stick and Alexa-enabled smart Echo speakers that are slashed in price during Prime Day. These don’t tend to hit shelves until a couple of months later, around March, so it’s worth waiting until then.

The LNER journey was going as planned when, just after departing Peterborough station at 7.30pm on Saturday, a mass stabbing attack began to unfold. Passengers were seen hiding in train toilets to escape the rampage, The Times reported, after a man with a large knife made his way through a carriage. For Mr Foster, who told BBC News the incident “felt like forever”, the chaos was unfolding eerily slowly. She told me she was listening to music on the train when a man tried to stab her. The man, who gave his name as Steve, told BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House programme he and his children fled to a nearby house.

There are some 3 million compelling reasons for Prime Minister Keir Starmer not to roll out a national system of mandatory digital identity cards. That’s the number of signatures on a monster online parliamentary petition opposing his plan — announced in late September — even before an official consultation could begin. On a recent trip to India, Starmer pointed to that country's vast digital ID system as a "massive success,” taking in a visit to Infosys, one of the biggest providers of its architecture. Back home, the opposition is plainly formidable. Many countries with strong traditions of civil liberties have ID cards.
