As the new year issues its annual invitation to stocktake, the thing I keep thinking is where we might place the equivalent emotional pivot points, those periods in which, after years of – God willing! – pottering along feeling roughly the same, suddenly, one day, there’s a change. I turned 50 at the end of November, which in any age prior to ours, would put me safely on the other side of a full-scale midlife crisis. Three big pivot points in a life when one becomes, briefly but acutely, aware of time passing, and which in my experience, tends to hit during even-numbered years (for that reason, I’ve always preferred the lower pressure of odd-number ages). That’s the other thing about these pivot points: their unavoidability.

David Shepherd, of Brigbourne Drive in Seaton, says he has lived at his home for 17 years, and prior to 2015 had never experienced any flooding at the property. A decade on, Mr Shepherd's property flooded on November 13 of this year during Storm Claudia and again on December 15. "The council aren't maintaining the gutters and the drainage we have got, all they are doing is cleaning up after an event," said Mr Shepherd. We have previously advised homeowners on property flood resilience measures following Storm Desmond. "We remain committed to working with residents and partners to reduce flood risk wherever possible.

The university's Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film and its founder Martha M. Lauzen have tracked employment of women in behind-the-scenes decision-making jobs for nearly three decades. Roles included in the study are: directors, writers, executive producers, producers, editors and cinematographers. Lauzen launched her effort in 1998, assuming that pointing out the imbalance would cause doors to swing open for women in Hollywood. Her study found that, in 2025, women constituted 28% of film producers and 23% of the executive producers. "Add the current political war on diversity, and women in the film industry now find themselves in uncharted territory," Lauzen wrote.

Jan 01, 2026 13:00:00Mammal 'monogamy ranking' announced, humans between beavers and white-handed gibbonsSome animals have multiple partners throughout their lives, while others, like modern humans, are primarily monogamous. For example, mountain gorillas had a sibling rate of 6%, while chimpanzees only had a 4% sibling rate. The top-ranked California footed mouse, which maintains a lifelong partnership with its mate, has a sibling rate of 100%. The lowest-ranked breed is the Soay sheep, which lives in Scotland, with a sibling rate of just 0.6%. Humans are often driven to monogamy by religious taboos or other social pressures, so polygamy will emerge quickly if these pressures lose force.
