Yet Santa Paws has become one of the city’s most popular festive events since it was originally launched by publican Sean Hughes at The Boot several years ago. It is now hosted by The Lower Red Lion in Fishpool Street and this year raised £695 for homelessness charity Open Door. One evening in the run-up to Christmas saw 58 dogs and 45 humans come into the child-free pub, snuggle up to Santa for their Christmas ‘pawtrait’ and receive a festive goodie bag. Landlord David Worcester said: “We’ve got loads and loads of dogs in St. Albans, everyone loves a dog, and it’s just wacky and super fun. You’ve just got to embrace the madness and the chaos.”All pictures by Desneri Photography.

Alongside the wealth of football on TV, one of my favourite things about the festive period is Christmas films. As we look to the January transfer window, top of the Norwich City wish list has to be at least two wide players. Injuries to Ante Crnac and Papa Amadou Diallo have left us desperately short in that area. Oscar Schwatau has done a decent job on the left, but the right hand side has been a particular issue. Amankwah Forson has certainly worked hard, but he is a square peg in a round hole and sadly it tells.

Rates remain highest among people aged 85 and over, at 47.0 per 100,000, though this is down week on week from 64.5. “Flu is always unpredictable, is still circulating and could bounce back even further in the new year as we have seen in past years. Speaking at the time, Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS England’s national medical director, said the combination of strikes and winter viruses meant “many hospitals will be on high alert in the days ahead”. Flu admissions in England last winter peaked at 16.2 per 100,000 people in the week before Christmas, some way above levels seen so far this year. They climbed even higher in winter 2022/23 to 18.1 per 100,000, during what was the UK’s worst outbreak of flu for a decade.

Algeria Officially Declares French Colonisation a CrimeAlgeria’s parliament has unanimously approved a law declaring French colonisation of Algeria a crime. The law demands an official apology and reparations from France for the damages caused during the colonial period. Colonial rule over Algeria lasted from 1830 until Algeria’s independence in 1962, a period marked by mass killings and deportations. French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged France’s colonisation of Algeria as a “crime against humanity.” Yet, Macron has stopped short of issuing a formal apology. Algeria’s new law fits into a broader regional push by African leaders seeking recognition of colonial crimes and reparations.
