By Megumi FujikawaTOKYO--?The Japanese government's focus when responding to moves in the yen will be based on how it affects people's lives and economic activity, the country's new finance minister has said. "We need to take necessary measures while closely watching the effects [of currency moves] on people's lives and economic activities, rather than responding to the foreign-exchange market itself," Katsunobu Kato said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires and other media on Monday. The yen has swung wildly against the dollar in the past months due to speculation over the course of monetary policies in the U.S. and Japan, plus uncertainties over the global economic outlook. The dollar stood at 162 yen in early July and was last trading around 148.50 yen Monday. Write to Megumi Fujikawa at megumi.fujikawa@wsj.com(END) Dow Jones Newswires10-06-24 2350ET

FILE PHOTO: Suspected Russian arms dealer Bout is escorted by DEA officers after arriving in New York(Reuters) - Viktor Bout, the Russian arms dealer who was jailed in the United States and then swapped two years ago for the U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner, is back in international arms trade, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. The potential arms transfers are yet to be delivered, the WSJ reported. Bout was one of the world's most wanted men prior to his 2008 arrest in Thailand on multiple charges related to arms trafficking. For almost two decades, Bout was one of the world's most notorious arms dealer, selling weaponry to rogue states, rebel groups and murderous warlords in Africa, Asia and South America. His notoriety was such that his life helped inspire a Hollywood film, 2005's Lord of War, starring Nicolas Cage as Yuri Orlov, an arms dealer loosely based on Bout.

However, with the growth of Amazon and TikTok, it has become clear that Google's share is on the verge of falling below 50%. On the other hand, Amazon is expanding its market share, which was only 10% in 2018, but is expected to exceed 20% in 2023 and reach 24.2% in 2025. It has been pointed out that Amazon's advertising business has become a revenue source that exceeds that of AWS and Amazon Prime. Jeremy Cornfield, president of marketing firm Tinuiti, told The Wall Street Journal that TikTok's return on ad spend can sometimes rival that of Google.

According to sources, Salt Typhoon may have had access not only to investigative systems but also to more general internet traffic. Verizon Communications, AT&T and Lumen Technologies were named among the ISPs affected by the breach. Generally, companies are required to promptly report and disclose any significant cyberattacks to financial regulators, but 'there are cases where they are exempt from disclosure for national security reasons,' The Wall Street Journal noted. It was unclear at the time of writing whether systems supporting the monitoring of foreign intelligence activities were also exposed to Salt Typhoon attacks.

Throughout Donald Trump’s presidency, the New York Times faced relentless charges of selling out for access journalism — minimizing the administration’s ineptitude and cruelty in order to maintain favored status among national media companies. He voices outlandish claims that seem to be made up out of whole cloth.”In an explanatory Sunday piece on Trump’s cognitive decline, reporters Peter Baker and Dylan Freedman — should we read anything into Maggie Haberman’s byline not being on this report? — finally compile what millions of voters already have witnessed: The mental degradation of Trump:According to a computer analysis by The New York Times, Mr. Trump’s rally speeches now last an average of 82 minutes, compared with 45 minutes in 2016. Mr. Trump frequently reaches to the past for his frame of reference, often to the 1980s and 1990s, when he was in his tabloid-fueled heyday. Interestingly, in Sunday’s piece, the Times calls Trump’s condition a “cognitive change,” while the story’s URL says it’s “cognitive decline.” Even in this instance, it’s likely a telling hedge.
