The American Federation of Government Employees, two of its California locals, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed suit on September 30 in federal court in San Francisco. The unions are now asking the court for immediate injunctive relief to halt the firings. When shutdowns occur, federal employees are either classified as “excepted,” meaning they continue working without pay until funding resumes, or “non-excepted,” meaning they are temporarily furloughed. Approximately 750,000 federal employees remain furloughed nationwide. The court in San Francisco is expected to rule soon on the unions’ emergency motion.

And for the first time ever, the Department of Justice joined the case to argue against the Voting Rights Act. During the first round of arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, Kavanaugh appeared fixated on the temporal argument. Now that the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act is before the court, he can flip and join the other four conservatives to end its application to redistricting. His decision in that case relied on the same temporal argument that Kavanaugh now raises in Louisiana v. Callais. That moment was one of many efforts to reshape me into a version of Black womanhood palatable to predominantly white nonprofits. What feels subtle to others is glaringly apparent to Black women — it is our daily reality. Tema Okun’s work on white supremacy culture shows how perfectionism, fear of conflict, and control thrive in progressive organizations. The moment I understood that no matter how much I code-switch, smile, submit or adapt, I will never be the right kind of Black woman. Because she doesn’t exist; she was imagined to keep Black women quiet.

Vance did not rule out the possibility of President Donald Trump invoking the Insurrection Act when asked directly about it in a Sunday interview. “Are you seriously considering invoking the Insurrection Act?” host Kristen Welker asked Vance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” as the two discussed the deployment of troops to U.S. cities. “Right now, he hasn’t felt he needed to.”The vice president’s comments come as Trump raised the prospect of using the Insurrection Act last week and as NBC News has reported that the move has been under discussion among White House officials. Under the Insurrection Act, the president can deploy the military to address a rebellion or civil unrest, though it’s rarely been enacted. I’m on contract!” That amounted to a decent income I counted on since leaving a full-time job to raise my then 3-year-old. In fact, two of my articles were immediately reassigned, and my dismissal was announced to coworkers, who sent sympathy emails. This woman wasn’t just my boss; we had gone out for drinks and dinners multiple times, and she had come to my baby shower. I couldn’t wrap my brain around how she could be so heartless and cruel — and frankly, I never forgot it. I wanted to turn my back and pretend she didn’t exist, but she was too quick.

Chappell Roan may be “HOT TO GO!” but she’s definitely not cool with ICE. Chappell Roan, seen here at an August festival in Budapest, Hungary, said "Fuck ICE" during a sold-out concert in the Los Angeles-area on Friday. Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, carved time out of her Sunday to knock the Grammy-winner in a shady statement to TMZ. September numbers from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) show 71.5% of Department of Homeland Security detainees have no criminal convictions. The nonpartisan research organization calculates its statistics from government data, largely obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests.
