SEOUL: North Korea launched at least one short-range ballistic missile off its east coast Monday, South Korea's military said, a day after the North vowed "offensive and overwhelming" responses to a new US military drill with South Korea and Japan. "Monday's launch was the North's first weapons firing in five days.On Wednesday, North Korea launched what it called a multiwarhead missile in the first known launch of a developmental, advanced weapon meant to defeat US and South Korean missile defences. North Korea said the launch was successful, but South Korea dismissed the North's claim as deception to cover up a failed launch. In recent weeks, North Korea has also floated numerous trash-carrying balloons toward South Korea in what it has described as a tit-for-tat response to South Korean activists sending political leaflets via their own balloons. Observers say the pact could embolden Kim to launch more provocations at South Korea. On the meeting's second day, North Korea's leader spoke about "some deviations obstructing" efforts to improve the country's economic status and unspecified important tasks for resolving immediate policy issues, North Korea's state media reported Sunday.

For the first time in 27 years, the US Census is changing how it categorizes people by race and ethnicity. Therefore, the racial and ethnic categories included within census data are crucial for addressing the needs of different communities. However, since race is a social construct, and therefore malleable, the US Census has approached the race question differently over time. Having representation like that, it feels meaningful.”Changes to the US Census…will inevitably continue to shape the health data landscape. Therefore, changes to the US Census have spillover effects on health data collection efforts, and will inevitably continue to shape the health data landscape.

"I was just looking to stay up. I'm too little to see what's going on but I could hear it," Cavendish said. "Someone skidded and I was just waiting for someone to hit from behind. Luckily they didn't and we kind of got through, but we were way off it and with 2.5K to go we were out of it. I don't think anybody was seriously hurt and that's the main thing."

Niger is considering routing its oil through neighboring Chad and Cameroon, instead of using a China-backed pipeline running from Niger to Benin’s coast, after protracted diplomatic disputes with the latter and a recent rebel attack that damaged the vital pipeline. State media said the “malicious individuals” who had sabotaged part of the pipeline would be apprehended and prosecuted. Niger has kept its borders closed to goods from Benin, alleging its neighbor was hosting French forces that were training others to destabilize Niger, a claim Paris has denied. To find a solution out of this impasse, the Niger junta is considering reviving the option of routing the oil through neighboring Chad and Cameroon. But “the Chad option is not a simple solution, as it involves building a new (oil) pipeline,” says Seidik Abba, researcher and president of the International Centre for Studies and Reflections on the Sahel (CIRES).

Ethiopia and South Sudan are putting the final touches to start building a 220-km cross border road that would cost up to 738 million dollars. The deal for the road was signed by the two governments in May 2023 and has just been approved by the South Sudanese legislative assembly, according to an Ethiopian foreign ministry statement. Trade between the two countries has yet to hit its potential partly because of the lack of proper roads and instability. According to the financial agreement, Ethiopia will cover the cost of the road project, while South Sudan will pay back via crude oil exports.
