Hunter/gatherers discovered different staples depending on where they were, columnist explainsHumans migrated from Africa to Eurasia some 50,000 years ago. In their new territories, hunter/gatherers discovered new foods, particularly ‘staples.’ These are foods that yield the most energy for the least effort. Meanwhile, in Africa, hunter/gatherers began to rely on sorghum and various types of millet as staple foods. A semi-solid staple food, polenta, was based on maize in Southern Europe. In East and Central Africa, a similar staple (called sadza or ugali) was originally sorghum or millet based, but it is made of maize today.

If Saturday's warm-up match at the same venue, the inaugural game at the temporary 34,000-seater stadium, is anything to go by, batting could be tough. Some deliveries in the warm-up game between India and Bangladesh stayed low, others bounced or seamed. Only one half-century was scored and nine of the 16 bowlers used were able to get away with conceding fewer than eight runs an over. It was all, you might say, so 2014.

Observers say South Korea will likely restart front-line loudspeaker broadcasts into North Korea that include criticism of its abysmal human rights situation, world news and K-pop songs. Kim, the North Korean official, said North Korea flew 3,500 balloons carrying 15 tons of wastepaper. In 2020, North Korea exploded an empty, South Korean-built liaison office in the North in anger over the South Korean balloon activities. They say North Korea is also expected to further ramp up tensions ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. Since 2022, North Korea has sharply increased the pace of weapons tests to build a bigger nuclear arsenal.

North Korea said Sunday it would stop sending trash-filled balloons across the border into the South, saying the "disgusting" missives had been an effective countermeasure against propaganda sent by anti-regime activists. South Korean military officers on a Seoul street check unidentified objects believed to be North Korean trash from balloons between the night of June 1 and 2, 2024. Earlier this week, Pyongyang described its "sincere gifts" as a retaliation for the propaganda-laden balloons sent into North Korea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the balloons had been landing in northern provinces, including the capital Seoul and the adjacent area of Gyeonggi, which are collectively home to nearly half of South Korea's population. Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong -- one of Pyongyang's key spokespeople -- mocked South Korea for complaining about the balloons this week, saying North Koreans were simply exercising their freedom of expression.

Soldiers inspect debris from a balloon sent by North Korea that landed in Incheon, South Korea. She compared North Korea’s actions to South Korea’s years-long practice of sending balloons with anti-North Korea leaflets the other way. North Korea is almost completely closed off from the rest of the world, with tight control over what information gets in or out. Earlier this year a South Korean research group released rare footage that it claimed showed North Korean teenagers sentenced to hard labor for watching and distributing K-dramas. But the situation in North Korea deteriorated in the following years and diplomatic talks fell apart – prompting strict rules to snap back into place.

King Mohammed VI appointed new chiefs in several key energy and logistics institutions. These include the Moroccan agency for sustainable energy MASEN, the electricity and water agency ONEE, Airports authority ONDA, ports agency ANP, and the highways company ADM, a statement by the palace spokesman said following a ministerial council held Saturday in Casablanca under the Chairmanship of the King. Key to Morocco’s energy transition efforts MASEN has long been without a Director General since its former head Mustapha Bakoury was removed. The airports authority, which braces for a series of upgrades in different airports, will be chaired by Adil El Fakir, former head of Morocco’s tourism promotion office ONMT. The highway agency ADM will be led by Mohammed Cherkaoui Eddeqaqi, while the national electricity and water agency (ONEE) will have Tarik Hammane as new director general.

Morocco adopted a draft decree to create two defense industrial zones that will be home to military plants focusing on defense equipment, weapons, and munitions. Many companies submitted investment proposals in the defense industry field which requires specific technical, economic, legal, and technological criteria, according to the statement. In 2020, Morocco’s House of Representatives passed a law seeking to attract foreign investment, promote innovation and expand the country’s defense industrial base. Morocco has one of the largest armies in Africa and one of the largest defense budgets on the continent. It has included a defense industry dimension in its recent military cooperation deals with Brazil and the US to mention but a few.

North Korea says balloons are a response to leaflets launched across border by activists in South Korea. South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense did not immediately comment on the number of balloons or how many landed in South Korea. In 2020, North Korea blew up an empty South Korean-built liaison office on its territory after a furious response to South Korean civilian leafleting campaigns. In 2014, North Korea fired at propaganda balloons flying towards its territory and South Korea returned fire, though there were no casualties. In 2022, North Korea even suggested that balloons flown from South Korea had caused a COVID-19 outbreak in the isolated nation, a highly questionable claim that appeared to be an attempt to blame the South for worsening inter-Korean relations.

Opposition parties have hailed the result as a momentous breakthrough for a country struggling with deep poverty and inequality, but the ANC remained the biggest party by some way. “The way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC’s majority and we have done that,” said main opposition leader John Steenhuisen. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent Electoral Commission that ran the election, but the ANC cannot pass 50 percent. But he will be weakened and could face calls to quit both from opposition parties and critics in the deeply divided ANC. On Friday, however, a top ANC official backed him to stay on as party leader, and analysts say he has no obvious successor.

SEOUL: North Korea again sent trash-carrying balloons into the South on Saturday, the South Korean military said, a day after Seoul warned of countermeasures against such activity. Earlier this week, North Korea sent around 260 balloons carrying bags of trash, including waste batteries, cigarette butts and what appeared to be manure, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. North Korea is “once again floating balloons carrying waste toward the South”, the JCS said in a text message to reporters. North Korea has long been infuriated by the balloons sent by South Korean activists, which carry anti-Pyongyang leaflets. South Korean defence minister Shin Won-sik on Saturday said North Korea sending balloons with waste was “unimaginably petty and low-grade behaviour”.

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party is projected to lose its parliamentary majority after 30 years with more than 99 percent of votes counted on Saturday in the historic election. ANC received about 40 percent vote in Wednesday’s election, leaving them short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela. The ANC will be forced to form a coalition to govern South Africa. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent Electoral Commission that ran the election, but the ANC cannot pass 50 per cent according to projections. The ANC swept to power in 1994 on a pledge to “build a better life for all,” winning almost 63% of the vote in the country’s first democratic election.
