Frank LennonSpecial to The JournalOn a Sunday four weeks ago, I walked through the stillness of a North African summer morning, marveling at the perfectly manicured grounds of the 27-acre North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia. Here lie the remains of 2,841 of our military dead from World War II, representing 39% of the burials originally made in North Africa and Iran. He died Aug. 9, 1942 – a full two months before the U.S. invasion of North Africa began in November. The initial Providence Journal report (Aug. 31, 1942) says Leger died in an airplane crash, not that he was shot down. Furthermore, seven of the 11 crew members survived, and they must have corroborated what had happened.

South Korea plans to nullify peace deal to punish North Korea over trash-carrying balloon launches
SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea announced Monday it’ll suspend a rapprochement deal with North Korea to punish it over its launches of trash-carrying balloons, even after the North said it would halt its balloon campaign. Over several days, North Korea flew hundreds of balloons to drop trash and manure on South Korea in an angry reaction against previous South Korean civilian leafleting campaigns. On Sunday, South Korea said it would take “unbearable” retaliatory steps in response, before North Korea abruptly announced it would stop flying balloons across the border. AdvertisementThe security council said the suspension would allow South Korea to resume military drills near the border with North Korea and take effective, immediate responses to provocations by North Korea. Tension spiked after North Korea’s spy satellite launch last November prompted both Koreas to take steps in breach of the accord — South Korea resuming frontline aerial surveillance and North Korea restoring border guard posts.

IATA announces Strengthened Profitability Projections for Airlines in 2024
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced strengthened profitability projections for airlines in 2024 compared with its June and December 2023 forecasts. Outlook highlights include: • Net profits are expected to reach $30.5 billion in 2024 (3.1% net profit margin). That will be an improvement on 2023 net profits which are estimated to be $27.4 billion (3.0% net profit margin). • Operating profits are expected to reach $59.9 billion in 2024, up from an estimated $52.2 billion in 2023. The expected aggregate net profit of $30.5 billion in 2024 is a great achievement considering the recent deep pandemic losses.

North Carolina man drowns at Smith Mountain Lake
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A North Carolina man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake Saturday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say around 7:40 p.m., someone reported that 73-year-old Stephen Sykes of Littleton, North Carolina had fallen into the water at Magnum Point Marina and hadn’t resurfaced. Deputies searched the water and found Sykes dead. While they believe his death was an accident, they say it is an active investigation.

David Levy, Ex-Laborer Who Became a Top Israeli Leader, Dies at 86
David Levy, a Moroccan-born Israeli who rose from ditch digger to Israel’s political heights, often embodying the resentments of Jews of North African and Middle Eastern origin who felt ill-treated by Europe-rooted elites, died on Sunday at a hospital in Jerusalem. David Levy, Moroccan-born ex-foreign minister of Israel, dies at 86
Levy moved at age 20 from Morocco to Beit Shean, an isolated town in Israel’s north. He served in the Knesset, or parliament, from 1969 to 2006, holding the posts of foreign minister, deputy prime minister and housing and construction minister at various times. At the height of his career, he was a rival in the Likud party to Israel’s current prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During his tenure as foreign minister, starting in 1990, Levy renewed relations with many countries, including China and what was then the Soviet Union. He was the foreign minister during the Madrid Conference in 1991, which helped launch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, though he did not attend.

North Korea vows to stop trash balloons after sending hundreds over border
North Korea said Sunday it would stop sending trash-filled balloons across the border into the South, saying the "disgusting" missives had been an effective countermeasure against propaganda sent by anti-regime activists. Late Sunday, the North announced it would stop its campaign, after scattering what it claimed was "15 tons of waste paper" using thousands of "devices" to deliver them. Earlier this week, Pyongyang described its "sincere gifts" as a retaliation for the propaganda-laden balloons sent into North Korea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the balloons had been landing in northern provinces, including the capital Seoul and the adjacent area of Gyeonggi, which are collectively home to nearly half of South Korea's population. The two Koreas' propaganda offensives have sometimes escalated into larger tit-for-tats.
