44th BCS: PSC suspends oral exams on Aug 1, Aug 4, and Aug 5
The Bangladesh Public Service Commission has announced that the 44th Bangladesh Civil Service general cadre oral examinations scheduled for Aug 1, Aug 4, and Aug 5 have been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. The exams were suspended for now and new dates for them would be announced at a later time, he said. Under the circumstances, the PSC suspended the exams on Jul 24. The PSC said at the time that due to unavoidable circumstances, the oral examinations (cadre and non-cadre) for the 44th BCS would be suspended until Jul 31. The non-cadre written, practical, and oral examinations were also suspended at the time.

Fifth Indian killed fighting in Ukraine for Russia
NEW DELHI, July 29, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - An Indian soldier died fighting withRussian forces in Ukraine, one of his relatives said Monday, the fifthconfirmed death so far of an Indian citizen in the conflict. Ravi Moun, 22, went to Russia in January after he was promised a job intransport by a private recruitment agent, his brother Ajay told AFP by phone. But he was later given weapons training and forced to join fighting on thefrontier with Ukraine in March. India's foreign ministry said last week that the government was still workingwith Russian authorities to bring back around 50 Indians fighting alongsidethe Russian army. India is a longstanding ally of Russia and has shied away from explicitcondemnation of the invasion of Ukraine.

Hezbollah evacuates positions ahead of expected Israel raids: source close to group
BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 28, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Hezbollah has evacuated positions in south and east Lebanon after Israeli threats of reprisals for a deadly strike on the annexed Golan Heights, a source close to the group said Sunday. Israel blamed Lebanon's Hezbollah movement for firing a Falaq-1 Iranian rocket but the Iran-backed group -- which has regularly targeted Israeli military positions -- said it had "no connection" to the incident. Hezbollah has a strong presence in east Lebanon's Bekaa valley, which borders Syria, and in south Lebanon, where it has been launching near daily attacks on Israeli positions since October in support of ally Hamas. Hezbollah had already abandoned positions in Syria in early June after Israeli raids, according to the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria. That strike prompted Iran to launch a first-ever direct missile and drone attack against Israel on April 13-14, sending regional tensions skyrocketing.

Wandering wolf of the Southwest confined through 2025 breeding season in hopes of producing pups
SANTA FE, N.M. — An exceptionally restless female Mexican gray wolf nicknamed Asha will be held in captivity with a potential mate through another breeding season in hopes of aiding the recovery of the species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Thursday. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesperson Aislinn Maestas said the wolf, known to wildlife biologists as F2754, has shown signs of bonding and breeding activity with a captive-born male, though so far without producing pups. The hope is that the pair may be released with pups, depending on the outcome of a February-May 2025 breeding period. The Fish and Wildlife Service noted that the wolf, born in 2021, had wandered into territory where there are no other wolves to breed with.

147 killed in quota protest clashes, says home minister
“So far, our initial count says that 147 people were killed,” he said at the Secretariat on Sunday in response to a question.
