Root leads England fightback against West Indies
Joe Root led an England fightback as they moved to within eight runs of the West Indies’ first-innings score, reaching 274-7 at tea on the second day of the third Test on Saturday. Jamie Smith, playing his third Test, was unbeaten on 56 at tea with Chris Woakes on 21 not out. Root featured in a 115-run sixth wicket partnership with captain Ben Stokes that hauled England back from a precarious position after they lost two early wickets. Root and Stokes steadied the innings, however, taking England to 157-5 at lunch, with Root bringing up his 63rd test half century after surviving an lbw appeal on 10. Smith kept up the scoring tempo as he and Root brought up their 50-run partnership in less than 11 overs.

Accused of bribing MPs, Colombia's intelligence chief resigns
BOGOTA, July 27, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Colombia's intelligence chief, a close ally of President Gustavo Petro, resigned Friday after being accused by prosecutors of bribing lawmakers to speed up the passage of bills through parliament. Petro wrote on the X social network that he had accepted "the resignation" of Carlos Ramon Gonzalez. "His position as head of civil intelligence is incompatible with any judicial investigation," he added. The two accused said they were willing to strike a deal and give information to prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. Investigations have been opened into current Minister of Finance Ricardo Bonilla and former Interior Ministry chief Fernando Velasco, authorities said.

Ex-DUCSU VP Nur sent to jail in Setu Bhaban vandalizing case
DHAKA, July 26, 2024 (BSS) – A court here has sent former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur to jail in a case lodged over vandalizing and setting fire to Setu Bhaban in the capital’s Banani area on July 18. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shakil Ahammed passed the order as police produced Nur before the court after end of his five-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of probe. The court on July 21 placed Nur, also member-secretary of Gano Adhikar Parishad, on five-day remand. A mob of 250/300 people on July 18 stormed into the premises of Setu Bhaban, vandalized many vehicles, and motorbikes, ransacked different sheds and rooms, and later set those on fire. They attacked and beat many employees black and blue.
