May 4, 2024 (GEDAREF) – Thousands of Sudanese refugees have fled camps run by the United Nations in Ethiopia in northern Ethiopia, protesting a lack of security, severe food shortages, and inadequate medical care. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates 27,000 Sudanese refugees in Amhara and 20,000 in Benishangul-Gumuz. These dire conditions have driven many refugees to leave the camps, venturing into the unknown. Mustafa Omer, another refugee in Gondar, Ethiopia, urged the international community to address the dire humanitarian crisis caused by the Sudanese war. “There’s clear discrimination among refugees,” Omer said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Itemate Solutions, Robert van Breukelen, has appealed to the Ethiopian government to avoid pitfalls even as the country advances in its digital transformation drive. He further noted that to unlock the true potential of digital transformation, Ethiopia needs to prioritise several critical elements, including improving internet access in rural areas and expanding mobile use cases that cater to the needs of a diverse population. He said, “While the country’s internet penetration is only at 35% – accounting for 36 million people – its telco sector is poised for rapid growth. Thanks to the success of incumbent Ethiotel and the entry of Safaricom into the Ethiopian market, the telco sector may help drive greater digital inclusion throughout the country and accelerate the country’s transformation. There, the telco sector works closely with its dealer network to track scratch card sales and distribution to ensure citizen needs are catered for.

One in three IDA countries is poorer today than it was on the eve of the pandemic. While several major economies are seeing growth surprise on the upside, near-term projections for IDA countries are, on average, being revised down. Investment growth in IDA countries has generally been weak in recent years. Against a backdrop of historically challenging international and domestic circumstances, IDA countries’ policy efforts— should be complemented by significant and consistent international financing.
