NAIROBI: About 1,000 refugees have fled a UN-run camp in northern Ethiopia after reports of armed robbery, shootings and alleged abductions, the United Nations said on Friday. The UN’s refugee agency UNHCR said the refugees, from war-torn Sudan and also Eritrea, left the Awlala settlement in the Amhara region earlier this week “primarily because they did not feel safe”. “This follows several reports of security incidents, including crime, theft, armed robbery, shooting and alleged abductions,” a UNHCR spokesperson said in Nairobi, adding that the refugees also wanted services there to be improved. The Awlala camp lies about 70 kilometres from the Metema border crossing into Sudan, which descended into a brutal conflict between rival generals in April last year. The UNHCR spokesperson said teams from the agency and the Ethiopian authorities tried to encourage the refugees to return to Awlala, but that they refused and remain by the roadside about 1.5 kilometres away.

In it, Jal Maroo gives us a blow-by-blow account of what transpired at the meeting. So, it is in this context that I comment on a couple of the issues Jal Maroo raised. The first is the fact that Abiy’s emissaries revealed to Jal Maroo and the OLA that Abiy has sent them “a special message”. According to Jal Maroo, the regime delegates insisted on not divulging the “special message” in the presence of foreign observers that were at the meeting. This takes us to the second point Jal Maroo raised in his transcript.

The United Nations humanitarian aid agency says hundreds of thousands of people would be “at imminent risk of death” if Israel carries out a military assault in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The border city is a critical entry point for humanitarian aid and is filled with displaced Palestinians, many in densely packed tent camps. The war began Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked southern Israel, abducting about 250 people and killing around 1,200, mostly civilians. The meeting comes as Israel and Hamas were negotiating a potential cease-fire in Gaza and the return of Israeli hostages. “We know humanitarian aid is dire and the innocent people of Gaza, the Palestinian citizens obviously need that care.

But, “in Ethiopia, there are instances of journalists intimidated and unjustly detained for doing their job. We mark this day to shine a light on the issue and advocate for their release,” the statement called. “Devastated by inter-ethnic conflict and civil war, most of the recent gains in press freedom have been reversed. Ethiopia’s global index in freedom of the press showed improvement between 2018 and 2020 but continued to show alarming deterioration following the onset of the November 2020 war in Tigray.

These media outlets have been consistent in their lopsided position in spite of Ethiopia's positive development. An overwhelming majority of social media content, specifically over 85%, is centered on political topics. Anteneh highlighted the issue of ineffective regulation regarding social media platforms and how this lack of accountability has exacerbated the problem. The absence of strict measures that hold violators accountable for their actions allows individuals to act with impunity on social media. Besides, the authority is utilizing various platforms including its social media page and mass media and other outlets to enhance the public's awareness of media lies.

A slim majority (51%) of respondents assess their country's media as "somewhat free" or "completely free," while 44% consider the media "not very" or "not at all" free. Media freedom and independence were dealt a further blow in 2021 when Ethiopia's House of Peoples' Representatives appointed politicians to the board of the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA). Until April 2018, more than 200 media outlets had been banned. These media outlets are now in operation, albeit under erratic conditions. The pre-reform period of media in Ethiopia was marked by disrespect for media laws, which limited journalists' freedom of expression (Tufa & Dejene, 2023).
