In the coming weeks, top bankers with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are slated to fly to Ethiopia for critical meetings. For that reason, the IMF must condition any loan for Ethiopia upon immediate and serious reforms from Abiy’s corruption-addled regime. Thus, the upcoming IMF visit will be an opportunity to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone. Every crisis — even one as deadly and terrible as the recent bloodshed in Amhara region — is also an opportunity for something better to emerge on the other side. That’s why it is so critical that any IMF deal for Ethiopia become more than just a fiscal life raft for a brutal and corrupt regime.

Addis Ababa, 2024: Ethiopia has approved the inclusion of yellow fever vaccine into the country’s routine immunization schedule after a meeting of the Immunization Interagency Coordinating Committee (ICC) of Ethiopia on 19 January 2024. A single dose of yellow fever vaccine provides life-long protection. The Ethiopian population is among the 440 million people at risk located in the ‘yellow fever belt’ that lies at the Equator and spans 34 African countries. WHO estimates that 2.2 million cases and 30,000 deaths from yellow fever occur annually and 90% of these are reported in Africa. Routine immunization is considered the sustainable long-term approach to maintaining high levels of population immunity.

My personal experiences echo the urgency of addressing climate action. Our path must balance the urgency of climate action with the realities of economic and social dependencies on fossil fuelsI recently witnessed in Antarctica first-hand the retreat of glaciers that once seemed eternal, and local farmers speak of shifting growing seasons and unpredictable weather patterns. During my voyage to Antarctica, I saw the Southern Cross, a star visible only in the Southern Hemisphere. What happens in Antarctica will not, I am afraid to say, stay in Antarctica. Our path must balance the urgency of climate action with the realities of economic and social dependencies on fossil fuels.

Underlining support for Somalia's territorial integrity, the diplomatic source said, "The peace of Somalia is the peace of Ethiopia." Key for AfricaConversely, arguments that Türkiye's military and energy deals with Somalia are aimed at Ethiopia are unfounded. In 2021, Ethiopia and Türkiye also signed a Water, Military and Financial Cooperation Agreement during a visit by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Somalia may have used the recent deal with Türkiye as a balancing act against the Ethiopia-Somaliland deal and caused a war of words. Türkiye, then again, will pursue cooperation in humanitarian fields, economy, trade and military with both Ethiopia and Somalia, not aiming to endanger the balance.
