The residents said their demand for electricity in the community was becoming long overdue, while few higher-ups up government next-door to them are having access to electricity. The residents placed a roadblock on the main route from Jalloh Shop Community to other places, causing several vehicles to remain in a queue for hours. The residents placed specific reference to National Port Authority Managing Director, Bill Twehway, whom they alleged is benefiting from electricity while they remain in darkness. However, Daniel Deshield, District Coordinator of Montserrado County said the citizens concern is ‘cardinal,’ because the hydro tension line of the Liberia Electricity Corporation passes through the district and residents are not benefiting from electricity. Deshield said the residents were peaceful while staging the protest and he sees no reason while police will arrest them for speaking out.

New York – Liberia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr., is encouraging the United Nations to approach peacekeeping and the management of transition in ways and manner that will respond to the changing security environment and current global realities. Ambassador Kemayah observed that peacekeeping globally is becoming increasingly challenging, especially with increasing threats of terrorism, which has taken a new shape and form, as well the use of chemical weapons. In the case of Liberia, Ambassador Kemayah asserted that the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2333 was timely and appropriate and played a critical role in facilitating a smooth transition process from a peacekeeping presence to a United Nations Country Team. As a country, we also take pride; being considered a model country for successful transitions, from peacekeeping to peacebuilding, and also; from conflict to building resilience and lasting peace.” Ambassador Kemayah emphasized. Speaking earlier, former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (SRSG) Alan Doss said he wrote the book ‘A Peacekeeper in Africa’ to share his experiences about peacekeeping in Africa and the role of multilateralism, and proffer recommendations to enhance United Nations peacekeeping Missions, making them fit for purpose.

Liberia: 2019 Novel Coronavirus Has Now Hit Closer to Home; Are We Ready Just in Case? THE 2019 NOVEL CORONAVIRUS, which has now entered Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and West Africa’s most powerful nation, is the first in Sub-Sahara, which includes Liberia. LET’S BE CLEAR, officially, no Nigerian has been diagnosed nor has any Liberian, with the 2019 novel coronavirus, which is now named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). For instance, the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) originated from camels and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) originated from civet cats. AT THIS POINT, there is too little data available to say with certainty how severe COVID-19 is but preliminary findings indicate that it is less fatal than SARS coronavirus.

This puts Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission in a challenging position to rebrand the commission and restore what, many say, have seemed shambolic since its being. This has prompted the LACC to plan a National Anti-Corruption Conference gear towards galvanizing “various sectors of government involved with the fight against corruption into a collaborative system”. He called on other actors of anti-graft institutions in the country to adopt a “renewed approach”, collaborate and form “a firm stance against this menace. The conference will also look to ensure a “strong collective” commitment of political leaders, national institutions, the private sector as well as civil society organizations to fight corruption. According to the planners, the activities of the conference will be organized in two phases: the Technical Working Session and the National Anti-Corruption Conference.

An investigation has been launched by the Petroleum Distributors Union of Liberia about a petroleum scandal that involved dozens of importers and distributors throughout the country. “We are conducting the investigation to establish the number of distributors and importers of the petroleum involving the clandestine activities that, if not taken care of, could cause serious problems to the sectors,” Sheriff disclosed. “Those distributors and importers that are involved with this scandal will be dealt with drastically by the law,” Sheriff assured the retailers, most of whom have resolved to stage a peaceful protest at the compound of the Liberia Petroleum Refinery Corporation (LPRC). Sheriff also said any distributors or importers involved with this unwholesome business practice of receiving money under the pretense of supplying petroleum products in exchange, those individuals or entities would be made to account for any amount received from the retailers. “LPRC is only a custodian of the petroleum product for the importers and not responsible to sell the product, so you cannot directly hold them for the situation you find yourself with,” Sheriff added.

Out of the nineteen Cabinet seats and countless senior positions in the state owned enterprises, women occupy only three Cabinet and half a handful of sub-cabinet posts. Minister Cooper, in much the same timeframe, has built Fabrar Rice, Inc. into a major participant in the market for Liberia’s staple food. Herein lies the conundrum that Dr. Jallah and Minister Cooper face, in particular. This situation, if reflective of the realities inside government, amounts to Weah “woman-washing” the Cabinet. In effect Cooper, Jallah and Broh will have wasted their time and called upon themselves the people’s blame for the failures of this government.

On Saturday, February 29, 2020, hundreds of sympathizers flooded at the Freedom Worship Center near S.D. In limited words, he burst into tears and gave way to others who gave their tributes in remembrance of the late Miller. The death of Zenu Miller has been one that has heightened concerns about how tolerant the Weah Administration is regarding press freedom, which the President himself has promised to defend. Zenu posted on his Facebook page that he was flogged by some officers of the EPS “in full view of the EPS director”, an allegation that EPS Director, Trokon Nathaniel Roberts, has flatly denied. Meanwhile, Presidential Press Secretary, Solo Kelgbeh said on state radio recently that the Government of Liberia was prepared to compensate any pathologist of the family’s choice to perform an autopsy on the remains of the late Zenu Miller, but was not in agreement with the allegation that the EPS was involved with beating.
