Chairman Grigsby encouraged civilians, especially those wanting to have or possess hunting guns to have confidence in the government, especially authorities of the Small Arms Commission and the Liberia National Police who are collaborating partners in the civilian arms registration exercise. Chairman Grigsby thanked members of the Joint Security of Liberia, partners from the national and international levels for cultivating interest in the Civilian Arms Registration Exercise for hunters. During the launch of the exercise hunters were encouraged to abide by the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) laws prohibiting the killing of certain animals in Liberia. The registration and licensing of single barrel hunting guns is in fulfillment of Article 14 of the ECOWAS Convention of Small Arms and Light Weapons relating to the “Control of Possession of Small Arms and Light Weapons by Civilians”. As a state party to the Convention, Liberia passed the Firearms and Ammunition Control of 2016 to domesticate the Convention as a legal framework for arms control in the country.

Members of several civil society organizations are calling for the induction of the newly elected officials of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia. The National Civil Society Council of Liberia is a conglomeration of about 189 society organizations in Liberia. The aggrieved party include representatives of several CSOs includingPartnership for Sustainable Development (PaSD), National Human Rights and Budget (NHRBF), National Youth Movement, Gbarpolu County Civil Society Council, Maternal and Newborn Working Group and the Liberia Institute for Public Opinion (LIPO), among others. “We like to warn that, we the membership of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia will not sit and fold our hands and watch the democratic process and progress in civil society to be undermined,” they declared. “We will go to every length legally, within our reach to ensure the induction of our officials elect in the soonest.

FZE would have three subsidiaries registered in Liberia as follows: (1) SRIMEX Eco Fuel FZE, Inc. (Terminal Holding), (2) Liberia Oil Company – LOC (Petroleum Trading) and (3) Liberia Petroleum Storage Company – LPSC (Petroleum Storage). SRIMEX authorized Eco Fuel to collect and retain all revenue generated from the operation and apply its portion towards any debt owed. Eco Fuel has reportedly refused to turn over the funds collected and assigned as Road Fund. Eco Fuel, as a foreign entity not registered in Liberia, does not have any legal right to operate in Liberia. Eco Fuel FZE has also accused Srimex of hijacking its Petroleum Storage Terminal at the Freeport of Monrovia.

Robert Fagans, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development at the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has lauded the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) in Liberia for their continuous support toward the country’s agricultural sector. “We are not surprised by this gesture from WFP because of its numerous assistance in building the capacity of the sector in the past. This assistance is very timely, especially when the Government is contemplating on moving agriculture forward,” he said. The Minister of Finance & Development Planning, Samuel Tweah has been summoned by the Plenary of the House of Representatives for violations of the Public Financial Management (PFM) Law of Liberia. According to Plenary, Minister Tweah has failed to give quarterly reports as mandated by the PFM Law. Monrovia – Plenary of the House of Representatives has summoned Finance & Development Planning Minister Samuel Tweah and his principal deputies for their continued violations of the Public Financial Management (PFM) Law of Liberia. But the debate on the floor took a twisted turn when several lawmakers frowned on Minister Tweah for his flagrant violations of the PFM Law since he took over as Minister of Finance and Development Planning. Article 36 of the PFM Law, among other things, states that it is a general responsibility for all government officials handling public financial transactions to ensure that financial information is reported in a timely, comprehensive, and accurate manner by the law.

Liberia Learning Awards 2020 has been launched in Monrovia, with more than thirty-five guests in attendance on January 22, 2020. At the launch ceremony, Mr. Luther Jeke, the Manager of iCampus Liberia, facilitated a quick workshop-training to showcase aspects of the Liberia Learning Awards. Among the high-level delegates were Stanley Lukenge Goloba, USAID LAVI Director of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Maureen Sieh, USAID LAVI Communications Specialist. “The Liberia Learning Awards was created to serve the right purpose since many organizations in Liberia lack understanding of organization most often lack an ability to apply and track learning at the organizational level”, said Mr. Stanley Lukenge Goloba. Liberia and the United States of America, aside from being traditional allies, also share blood ties. Lest it be forgotten, official development assistance to Liberia is provided through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). However the United States of America through USAID remains the single largest provider of development assistance to Liberia. Similarly, around Africa, jihadism is fueled largely by resistance to corrupt governments which have failed to improve the lives of their people. We must avoid this and USAID can play a key role in averting such from unfolding in Liberia.

Some 12 Turkish companies have invested in Liberia, the heart of rubber and cocoa, while dozens have been exploring new investment opportunities. A number of Turkish companies, including Dedeman, Petlas, Demsa, energy vessel manufacturer Karadeniz Holding, Barer Holding and Dosso Dossi Holding have been researching investment opportunities in Liberia, where Turkish investors are given preferential treatment. Among the most popular sectors for investment in Liberia are rubber, cocoa, gold, and diamond products, as well as mineral, timber, and forest products.
