A group whose goal is to protect and promote the rights of women in Southeastern Liberia was formed recently at a regional women’s conference held recently in Greenville, Sinoe County. The 35 women delegates came from host Sinoe, as well as Maryland, Grand Kru, and Rivercess counties. “We, the delegates attending this conference, commit ourselves to act collectively to foster women’s rights in the region, recognizing that effective implementation of the land rights laws, especially the provision on women’s rights, will be crucial in ensuring protection for women’s rights to use, management and ownership of land,” the resolution read. The Land Rights Act was praised across the world for recognizing women’s ownership of land when it was passed into law last year. The project should have ended in 2018 but was extended for an additional one year after the enactment of the new land law.

The Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF) provision introduced by Senator Jack (D-RI) was contained in Section 7611 of the NDAA. The momentous bill, enacted exclusively for Liberians, was signed into law on Dec. 20, 2019 by President Donald Trump. USCIS will accept properly filed applications until Dec. 20, 2020, one year from the enactment of the LRIF.”USCIS also disclosed in its announcement that “the spouses, unmarried children under 21, and unmarried sons and daughters 21 or older of eligible Liberian nationals” are also eligible for Green Cards. According to the provisions of the LRIF, legal permanent residency would be approved as of the date of arrival in the United States for eligible applicants, and the USCIS is mandated to issue work authorization for anyone with application pending for more than 180 days. The workshops are expected to be held in a bid to inform Liberians of the immigration process, as well as their rights and privileges under the new law.

They included United States Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, Former New York City Comptroller John C. It was during that time that Jonathan Hicks formed a connection with Liberia and its people that would last throughout his life. According to the organizers, over 2000 children from around Liberia are expected to be hosted during the party. In October 2019, FFL, CEM and partners purchased over 3000 sets of toys in the USA and shipped them to Liberia for this party. MONROVIA – Ahead of the December 30 ‘Weah Step Down’ protest, the Government of the United States of America (USA), through its Embassy accredited near Monrovia, has issued a demonstration alert for its citizens. ICOP believed that COP’s decision to stage a protest is intended to undermine the country’s peace and stability and ‘undermine the constitution’. But in a statement posted on its website, the United States Embassy accredited near Monrovia cautioned its citizens to avoid the areas of the demonstration. S citizens residing or coming into Liberia that, “even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence”. Multiple groups are expected to demonstrate on different issues facing Liberians in various areas of Monrovia.

ICOP believed that the December 30 ‘Weah Step Down’ protest has an ulterior motive. “We are pleased to inform the authorities of our intention to stage a peaceful counter-protest on December 30, 2019 beginning at 4 am. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has endorsed the candidacy of African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina for a second term at the helm of the institution. “In recognition of the sterling performance of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina during his first term of office as President of the African Development Bank, the Authority endorses his candidacy for a second term as the President of the bank,” ECOWAS said in a communique issued after the meeting. Adesina is the eighth elected President of the African Development Bank Group. “You can always count on the African Development Bank – your Bank,” Adesina told delegates. These efforts are a key part of the regional integration agenda championed by the African Development Bank, as exemplified by the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to become the world’s largest free trade zone.

The aim of the technical assistance program is to assist the CBL to more effectively perform its core functions of managing the Liberian currency and creating the necessary monetary stability for broad-based, inclusive economic growth. This technical assistance includes assisting the CBL undertaking an open and competitive procurement process for currency printing, tracking the shipment of the currency from the printer to the CBL’s vaults, and properly placing the additional currency into the banking system and broader economy. It is important to note that USAID support would be limited to technical assistance provided by Kroll Associates. MONROVIA – UBA Foundation, the Corporate social responsibility arm of United Bank for Africa embarked on its annual social impact programmes in Liberia to give back to the community. The Foundation began with its Each One Teach One initiative where staff of UBA Liberia donated school materials and thought students of the Monrovia Demonstration School lifesaving skills. Than on December 20, 2019, the UBA Foundation launched its, Food Bank to feed the homeless, poor and needy. The UBA Foundation team in Liberia visited the Era Supermarket, Vamoma Junction and served community members where their Head Office is hosted (Broad Street).
