He said the Public Service Department is also prepared to consider this as many individuals are still productive at the current mandatory retirement age of 60. “The World Bank has proposed that Malaysia increase the retirement age of its public-sector workforce in stages since we now have a better life expectancy. Mohd Khairul said this when responding to a question from the media about the possibility of the government raising the retirement age for civil servants. The retirement age for government employees was increased from 55 to 56 in 2001. Mohd Khairul said the government will have to look at several aspects before reviewing the retirement age.

For those like Amelia Lim who have not been able to shuttle back and forth due to prolonged border closures, the VTL-Air scheme is welcome news. The six airlines are Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Malindo, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines and Scoot. And at the point of entry, you are once again supposed to do a PCR test (Singapore again allows for the cheaper RTK test). Singapore and Malaysia have strong business ties, with more than 100,000 Malaysians living and working in Singapore.

I was in London, England and my flight back to Malaysia was bound to leave Heathrow Airport in under three hours... and I was nowhere near the place. The fare for the Heathrow Express only costs £20 (RM114). Of the remaining money, £20 (RM143) was supposed to be spent buying a Heathrow Express ticket. By the time I reached Heathrow Airport, it was already 7.15am. Hopefully, once the world is back to “normal”, I would be able to experience going to Heathrow Airport again, without all the mini heart attacks, of course.

In its filing with the bourse, Genting Plantations attributed the growth for the quarter to the stronger performance of its plantation segment, underpinned by the increases in prices of palm products. It said the downstream manufacturing segment posted marginally lower year-on-year revenue amid lower sales volume, although this was mitigated by the higher selling prices. Looking ahead, it expects palm oil prices to remain resilient in the remaining part of the year, supported by sustained demand amid global economic recovery, tightness in supply ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, as well as the historically high prices of other substitute oils and fats. The biotechnology segment will continue to develop commercial solutions and applications to enhance the yield and productivity of oil palm, the company noted. It said the outlook for biodiesel, on the other hand, will remain challenging due to the unfavourable palm oil-gas oil spread.

As historians, diplomats must be able to understand the great tides and waves of history that sweep across the globe. Malaysia’s prosperity is profoundly shaped by global dynamics, and their accurate assessment by our diplomats as historians is absolutely essential. I would therefore venture to make what may be an intimidating assertion for some: the new generation of diplomats must also be scientists. The very first diplomats were heralds and messengers, who brought the views of their sovereigns to foreign lands and courts. In the evolving globalised world, diplomats should be ever ready to capitalise on new opportunities in what is a highly competitive environment.

NEW YORK: Oil prices rose to a one-week high on Tuesday after a move by the United States and other consumer nations to release tens of millions of barrels of oil from reserves to try to cool the market fell short of some expectations. But analysts said the effect on prices was likely to be short-lived after years of declining investment and a strong global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Brent futures rose $2.61, or 3.3%, to settle at $82.31, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $1.75, or 2.3%, to settle at $78.50. That was the biggest daily percentage gain for Brent since August and its highest close since Nov. 16. It also pushed Brent's premium over WTI to its highest since mid-October.
