MCA sets up NGO to help unfairly treated insurance claimants
PETALING JAYA: The MCA Civil Society Movement Bureau has set up a non-governmental organisation to seek justice for unfairly treated insurance claimants, says its chief Ng Kian Nam (pic). He said most insurance agents fail to properly advise their clients resulting in problems cropping up only after the insurance policies are purchased. "We also would like to invite the top management of insurance companies and Bank Negara to dialogue to try and settle the disputes amicably on some policy matters," he added. "My claims with two other insurance companies were successful but one was rejected as I had undergone an MRI scan in February 2018 for back pain. Ng urged those who have been unfairly treated by their insurance companies to contact the CPRICM secretariat at 011-1093 3109.

Uphill task ending tobacco menace

Allow old folk to walk in for jabs
We are glad to learn that drive-ins are being considered and sessions are being organised for people with disability. This clearly implies that the elderly folks who are patiently looking forward to their appointments are in fact inadvertently being sidelined. Every day and several times a day, I stare disappointingly and angrily at my MySejahtera registration page, which shows absolutely no progress at all. All they need to do to explain their predicament is to show the registration and status page on their MySejahtera app. I reckon this would be the fastest and most equitable way to clear the congestion if there is any.

Facebook says it will expand remote work to all employees
Employees have been able to work remotely since offices were closed at the beginning of the pandemic last year. “As part of my commitment to remote and hybrid work, I plan to spend as much as half of the next year working remotely,” Zuckerberg told employees Wednesday. By January 2022, Facebook employees will be allowed to permanently move between seven more countries in Europe, the Middle East or Africa. Recovered Covid-19 patients recall their painful experience

Having companions eases vaccination for the elderly
I accompanied my parents to the centre to help them fill up the forms and guide them throughout the vaccination process. There were sufficient signs to direct us from the parking lots to the vaccination hall. I would also like to point out that the stairs to the main vaccination hall are a bit steep for elderly individuals. However, companions could also help to hasten the vaccination process. Kudos to the Health, and Science, Technology and Innovation ministries for providing free vaccines and making the vaccination process very smooth.

It does not pay to be prompt
WHENEVER I read comments that response to the Covid-19 vaccination programme in Malaysia is tepid, I cannot help but be cynical. What about those of us who expressed our wish to be vaccinated by registering on MySejahtera in February? Instead of getting us willing Malaysians vaccinated, the government appears to be more worried about those who haven’t registered yet! My 64-year-old sister signed up the day MySejahtera opened for registration. And I hear of people who registered in April/May and are already getting their appointments.

According to Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, accountants bridge the gap between investors and management, and understand financial reporting. Sime Darby Bhd chief financial officer Mustamir Mohamad added that accountants have a role in standardising sustainability standards because the profession has experience in standardising international accounting standards in the past. As an accountant we also have experience in balancing costs and benefits in financial reporting disclosures, which is a key consideration in getting any company to adopt ESG (environmental, social and governance) reporting guidelines," said Mustamir. He noted that accountants must also develop the knowledge and engage with the relevant stakeholders such as non-governmental organisations to ensure that such sustainability reporting standards are up to scratch.
