Nigerian choirs bag medals in African choral competition
The Christ Holy Church Female Ensemble bagged a gold medal in the female choir category during the recently concluded African Choral And Gospel Championship. The competition, which hosted about 600 participants across the African continent, for its inaugural edition, took place in the city of Kigali, Rwanda from 22nd to 28th March, 2022. The African Choral and Gospel Championship is a pan-African choral festival aimed to celebrate African music, with the motive of uniting nations. The inaugural edition was organised in collaboration with Chorale de Kigali – a local choir with a membership of about 60. Nigeria’s multiple award-winning choir, the Lagos City Chorale, thrilled the large audience with scintillating performances, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and positivity of Nigeria both in choice of indigenous folk repertoire.

Don says Islam frowns against child abuse, cautions perpetrators
A lecturer in the Department of Accounting, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Ahmed Bello Dogarawa, has cautioned against all forms of child abuse, saying it is against the teaching and norms of Islam. Full list: Nigeria invite 40 players for WAFU U-20 championship
Head Coach of Nigeria’s U-20 Boys, Flying Eagles, Ladan Bosso, has called up 40 players for next month’s WAFU B U-20 Championship taking place in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic. The list has four goalkeepers, 12 midfielders, 17 midfielders and seven forwards. Invited players are to arrive in Abuja on Monday with their passports, according to the team secretary, Aliyu Ibrahim. Seven-time African champions, the Flying Eagles will play in Group B of the WAFU B Championship alongside Ghana and Burkina Faso, with the tournament scheduled for 7th – 20th May in Niamey. Only the two finalists will qualify from the WAFU B zone to participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Saudi Arabia pushed Yemen’s president to step down
Saudi Arabia pressured Yemen‘s president to resign earlier this month, with officials confining him to his home and restricting his communications, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. According to the officials, some Saudi officials threatened to publish what they said was evidence of Hadi’s corruption in their efforts to convince him to resign, the Journal wrote. Since leaving office, Hadi has been confined to his home in Riyadh and denied access to phones, a Saudi official told the Journal. Saudi Arabia welcomed Hadi’s resignation announcement and pledged $3 billion in aid and support for its war-torn neighbor. But the Houthis dismissed Hadi’s resignation as “a desperate attempt to reshuffle the ranks of mercenaries” fighting in Yemen and said peace would come only once foreign forces left.

Spain to reopen embassy in Kyiv: PM
Spain will reopen its embassy in kyiv “shortly,” said the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, on Monday, the last country to return its diplomats to the Ukrainian capital after the withdrawal of Russian forces. “We will reopen the Spanish embassy in kyiv in Ukraine shortly, in the coming days, as one more example of the commitment of the Spanish Government, of Spanish society, with the people of Ukraine,” Sánchez said during an interview with private television Antena 3. . Spain is supporting Ukraine with military material, humanitarian aid and hosting Ukrainian refugees. Turkey has moved its embassy in Ukraine to kyiv after moving it to Chernivtsi, near the Romanian border. France announced last week that its embassy would return to kyiv from the western city of Lviv.

Group sensitises schools, govt agencies to child sexual abuse
A non-governmental organisation, Protect the Child Foundation, has sensitised schools and government agencies on the need to take action to tackle the menace of child sexual abuse in various sectors. The Executive Director of PTCF, Mrs Elizabeth Achimugu, disclosed this during a two-day training workshop on creating sexual safety policies for schools in Abuja. Achimugu, during the workshop organised by PTCF with the support of Facebook Community Accelerator Programme, stated that the fight against child sexual abuse was the responsibility of everyone, especially teachers who spent more time with children as well as law enforcement agencies. “The essence of this workshop is to enlighten parents, teachers, and stakeholders on how to prevent, respond and report cases of child sexual abuse and how to secure justice for survivors/victims in compliance with extant laws,” he stated. A Chief Intelligence Officer of the NAPTIP, Helen Emuze, emphasised the need for everyone to be vigilant because abuse could come in different forms and could be contact (fondling and rape where there is penetration) or non-contact sexual abuse (where children are exposed to sexual content).

Two Kano commissioners resign
Two commissioners in Kano State have resigned their appointments to pursue their ambitions for the 2023 general elections. They are the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule-Garo, and Commissioner for Rural Development, Musa Kwankwaso. Their resignations were in compliance with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s ultimatum for political appointees aspiring to contest in 2023 general election to resign on or before today (Monday). He said, “I write with a deep sense of humility and gratitude to tender my resignation as Commissioner in charge of Kano State Ministry Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Kwankwaso, on his part, in a viral audio clip, thanked he governor for offering him the opportunity to serve in his administration.

These challenges have included mounting pressure on the exchange rate and foreign exchange reserves against the backdrop of excessive demand for foreign exchange concerning supply (limited export earnings and capital inflows, and weak accretion to foreign exchange reserves). In this piece, I front-load my conclusion that foreign exchange market deregulation is a quick-fix and escapist option that does not address the fundamental factors of the foreign exchange market crisis. Under a managed float exchange rate system, the government intervenes in the foreign exchange market (through the use of interest rate and/or foreign exchange supply) to influence the exchange rate to the desired level. Foreign capital brought into the country at a very high exchange rate will also be taken out at the same high exchange rate. The I & E exchange rate is the official exchange rate for investors, exporters and end-users.
