Minister of state for petroleum Timipre Sylva on Wednesday said there will be a major investigation into the circulation of an unsafe quantity of methanol in petrol imported into Nigeria. He did not disclose the identities of the companies involved in the circulation of the adulterated petrol but said the government is not in a rush to mete out any measures until the actual cause has been decoded. The minister said the Nigerian government will do an assessment of the number of vehicles damaged in the last few days as a result of the adulterated fuel. Ahmed said the adulterated fuel could have caused panic buying of petrol in some parts of Lagos and Abuja. “The NNPC Limited and all marketing companies have been directed to sustain sufficient distribution of petrol products in all retail outlets nationwide to avoid any scarcity,” Ahmed said.

What kinds of strategy should technology companies have for Africa? I stressed the fact that big technology companies, some of whom came for the LEAP event, should collaborate with technology companies in Africa, because most of them at home are small and driven by young people. This is a huge market that can be latched onto by technology companies. Governments in Africa should collaborate with technology companies to benefit the people of Africa. Many African countries did not reach independence because they gave up, we can attest to that through the struggles of our forefathers.

Africa is set to endure another year of living dangerously in 2022. All the putschists seem set to defy the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and consolidate their hold on power. Amidst rising food prices, the military-backed regime of Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers will continue repressing civil society and detaining journalists. Civil society groups will continue to resist this attempted civilian coup d’état. Africa thus seems set to endure another year of living dangerously in 2022.
