A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Dennis Idahosa, representing Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo State, has said that he had initiated action to address the gully erosion problems threatening parts of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and some adjoining communities. The federal lawmaker noted that when he undertook a tour of the gully erosion site, he was moved to tears because of the enormity of what he saw on the ground. “It was based on this that I had to initiate action on the need to address the devastating gully erosion at the UNIBEN and its surrounding environment. “Over the years, the gully have caused severe damages to the infrastructure and ecological environment at the UNIBEN and its adjoining communities. “The erosion has cut off the university from its host communities, making life unbearable for staff and students, alternative routes to the university and surrounding communities have been cut-off.

The House of Representatives has asked the Nigeria Customs Service to compensate victims of extrajudicial killings and injuries caused by its officers across the country with a total of N390,000,000. “The grand total for compensation for both the deceased and the injured is the sum of N82,000,000 only. “The value of total compensation is N26,000,000 only. “The number of souls lost being four; the value of total compensation for the four deceased is N80,000,000 only,” it added. “The grand total of compensation for both the deceased and the injured is the sum of N82,000,000 only.

Hoodlums yesterday, allegedly attacked and stabbed a driver of Channels TV, Lekan Sanusi, while the TV crew was recording the condition of gridlock on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway as well as around the Apapa and Tin Can ports, Lagos. Aside from him, the crew members of Arise Television, who were also within the axis to report on ease of movement around the ports, were also attacked by the hoodlums who asked them to halt recording. As gathered, the hoodlums that attacked the journalists were members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Maritime workers, as well as, those engaged by the Apapa Local Government. A reporter with Arise TV confirmed to The Guardian that she learnt about the attack but she was unable to speak with her colleague as at the time of filing this report. The United States told the families of its government employees in Belarus to leave the country, the State Department said Monday, as fears grow of a Russian invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. The US also accused Russia Monday of planning to build its military force in its ally Belarus to 30,000 within weeks. The State Department “ordered the departure of family members of U.S. government employees” from Belarus, it said in a travel advisory issued Monday. Moscow has also already placed some 5,000 troops in Belarus, according to the US. And he said that the troops in Belarus were there for joint exercises.

The bidding process for the cleanup of 37 additional oil-polluted sites in Ogoniland in the Niger Delta region has commenced, the Federal Government announced on Monday. She said, “In 2019, contracts for 21 lots were awarded for remediation, these covered 12 of the 65 listed sites in the UNEP (United Nation Environment Programme) report. These lots covered an area of 276 acres. The area covered is 289 acres. Ikeazor stated that the ministry was accelerating the remediation project and expanding on the livelihood programme of the hydrocarbon impacted communities.

The Valuejet Lagos Para Open is the second para competition that will be organized in the continent this year, after the Egypt Open. ITTF Head of Para, According to Pablo Pérez, stated that the ruling to list the Valuejet Lagos Para Open in its calendar was as a result of the event’s Appraisal by the ITTF team, adding that the experience of the country in organizing continental events was a factor. They invited the ITTF to send an Inspector to watch the event and evaluate the conditions and the conclusions were positive. This is not common at all in para events because now of the LOCs depend on public funding.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to supporting agricultural innovations that improve nutrition and food security in Nigeria. The Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in collaboration with Iowa State University (ISU), launched an online training course for 10 Nigerian scientists and regulators. “ISU’s Seed Science Center is partnering with USDA’s FAS to offer a four-month virtual training course on agricultural biotechnology. This training course will focus on biotechnology research, policies and regulations, management, and public outreach components, as well as biotechnology-related trade issues,” Smith said. The goal of the centre’s global outreach programme is to enhance food and nutritional security, environmental quality and economic development while facilitating seed trade.

At the end of trading activities for the first month of the year 2022 at the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), investors earned N2.28 trillion. Thus, the local stock market has advanced 3,908.23 base points since the start of the year. At the close of the market on Monday 31st January 2022, the stock exchange market value currently stands at N25.12 trillion from N24.90 trillion on the previous trading day. Hence, their respective share prices rose by 6.25 per cent, 5.93 per cent, 2.10 per cent, 1.91 per cent and 1.19 per cent. The NGX Insurance index, NGX Industrial Index and the NGX Consumer Goods index Increased by 0.60 per cent, 0.62 per cent and 0.28 per cent respectively.

The doctors initiated the action against Ahmed for alleged disregard to a court order. But the claimants averred that from August 2021 till date, the defendants are yet to fully comply with the said order. The claimants: Dr. Christopher Sakpa, Dr. Momoh Mcsionel, Dr. Ahmed Rabiu and Dr. Darlington Akukwu had, for themselves and on behalf of the affected members of ASMEDA, filed the motion against the defendants.
