Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, said the undemocratic takeover of government in some West African countries had posed a great challenge to electoral umpires in the sub-region. We are having democratic and electoral retrogression in the sub-region, and we have had undemocratic takeover in one or two places. Former Osun State governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on Thursday, reacted to various allegations concerning him which were made in the recently released autobiography of his predecessor in office, Chief Bisi Akande. Text of the statement reads:“I have just read a part of the recently released autobiography of my predecessor as governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, which concerns me. I consulted Chief Akande on this. I say so because I noticed that Chief Akande repeatedly blamed President Olusegun Obasanjo for the steps I took which he didn’t like. ” Ironically, Chief Akande was President Obasanjo’s favourite and the president always said this to those of us in his party.

The World Bank on Thursday announced that the global community has stepped up with a $93 billion support package to boost resilient recovery in the world’s poorest countries. In his reaction, the World Bank Group President, David Malpass said: “Today’s generous commitment by our partners is a critical step toward supporting poor countries in their efforts to recover from the COVID-19 crisis. About a third of IDA countries are facing a looming food crisis”, the World Bank said. “IDA will also deepen support to countries to better prepare for future crises, including pandemics, financial shocks, and natural hazards. “While IDA20 will support countries globally, resources are increasingly benefiting Africa, which will receive about 70 percent of the funding.

Nine people, including Puerto Rican music producer “Flow La Movie” died Wednesday when a private plane crashed at the Las Americas airport in the Dominican Republic capital Santo Domingo, the aircraft’s owner Helidosa said. Helidosa “regrets the tragic accident on one of its planes at Las Americas airport… in which tragically all of the crew and passengers died,” the company said in a statement. “Jose Angel, THANK YOU FOR YOUR GOOD VIBES ALWAYS,” Colombian reggaeton musician J Balvin posted on Instagram. And fellow Puerto Rican reggaeton musician Don Omar also posted to Instagram. The Las Americas airport suspended activity for two hours following the crash but had since resumed normal operations.

The Osun State Police Command has said one of its operatives, Sgt Joba Onatunde, is facing orderly room trial for being drunk while in uniform. Also in the video, the cop said he came from Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, to Osogbo, but did not disclose his mission. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said Onatunde had been arrested and detained over the matter. The Federal Government has approved a 20 per cent increase in salaries for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force. According to Dingyadi, the upward review is a product of the issues raised during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020. The Minister said that the sum of N13.13bn was approved for outstanding death benefits for 5,472 personnel. He, however, said that the payment would only commence after the Auditor General of Federation must have scrutinized and okayed it. This will not be the first time the President is approving an increase in Police salaries.

The Edo State Government has warned real estate developers and other stakeholders in the environment sector against acquiring land in various communities across the state without following due process. In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, said the illegal laying out of acquired land by developers has distorted the set-out Land Use Plan in the state and was contrary to the Benin Master Plan and Edo State Regional Development Plan. “Such transaction is illegal and persons involved will be visited with the full weight of the law, which includes the removal of such illegal structures and the cost of carrying out such action will be recovered from them.
