At least six people were killed in northern Burkina Faso in several attacks attributed to jihadists, local and military sources told AFP on Sunday. Several hundred people took to the streets of Burkina over the weekend to protest the wave of jihadist attacks engulfing the poor West African nation. “A terrorist attack cost six civilians their lives in Alga,” a town in the province of Bam, on Saturday a security source told AFP. A gendarme brigade came under a “terrorist attack”, the military said, adding that they died along with “several terrorists”. After a relative lull, jihadist attacks resumed, inflicting a toll of more than 200 civilian and military deaths over the past three months.

Gunmen who attacked a train in northwest Nigeria in March have freed 11 of their hostages in return for the release of their own children, security sources told AFP on Sunday. The attackers had issued a video in May threatening to kill the hostages if an agreement was not found. “Eleven of the passengers being held by the gunmen were released yesterday,” one source said. “They were swapped with eight children of the attackers who were taken in a previous (army) raid,” the source added. Gangs of bandits with no ideological or religious motives are known to kidnap for ransom in the northwest and central Nigeria.

The family of a British citizen have accused the foreign secretary of ignoring “overwhelming evidence” he was taken to Nigeria in an act of extraordinary rendition and failing to end his “unlawful” imprisonment there. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), a prominent separatist movement proscribed in Nigeria, has been held there since June last year. In a pre-action legal letter to the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, the family’s lawyers, Bindmans LLP, say there is “overwhelming evidence” that he was subjected to extraordinary rendition. Bindmans, which has previously threatened legal action over lack of consular assistance for Kanu, says Truss must take a view on whether there has been a breach of international law or face a court challenge. The UK Foreign Office and the Nigerian and Kenyan high commissions in London were all approached for comment.

In fact, they become more like vacuous clichés that epitomize the crass failure of those in government to protect the lives of innocent citizens, as enshrined in Section 14, Sub section 2(b) of the 1999 constitution(as amended). It would be recalled that I warned back then that: “the battle has just started, at least, here in Nigeria. But the then Governor Yari claimed that the victims were not Christians and that they were killed over a false alarm. For how long are we going to tolerate the mindless killings of innocent citizens, including even people at the places of worship, meant to be sacred here in Nigeria? Isaiah 26:10Instead, we should heed the Word of God that says: “Therefore, put away from among yourselves that wicked person”.

Stealthing is a term that denotes the non-consensual removal of a condom during sex. Simply put, a woman says yes to sex but no to condom-less sex. Victims of stealthing may also experience many of the same traumatic effects that other survivors of sexual violence do. Stealthing: An actual case of rape, sexual assault or what? In other words, in those 18 states, men could not be considered rape victims under the Law,” Nwagbara explains.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has described Nigeria as a country on the path to greatness just as he urged the citizens to play active roles for this to be fully achieved. According to the Speaker, Nigeria had, since 1999, experienced what could best be described as the teething stage of its democratic journey with the need for unity taking the centre-stage of public discourse. “The new story that we all anticipate, envisage and dream about for our country is achievable and right before us. All that is required is our collective resolve to be part of progress,” Obasa said. “We are honoured to be the current bearers of the baton of democracy and we look forward to upholding the labour of these heroes.”

Akinnukawe regretted that lack of accessible facilities was one of the challenges they faced in employing persons with disabilities, pledging to support the Inclusion Works Project embarked upon by Sightsavers. On his part, Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disability, Mr. James Lalu called on government agencies and employers to ensure five percent of their workforce are from this group before January 2024. “We have a data bank of 50,000 people with disabilities, and also have 500 who are fully qualified at the moment, and others whose data is not very well are refilling their information so that we can send them to different organizations,” Lalu added.
