MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Chairman Jose Luis Martin “Chito” Gascon was a symbol of democracy and human rights, according to the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP). “May his legacy and contributions for the continued protection and promotion of our democratic foundations and that of our human rights live within the Filipino people,” he added. He led investigations into alleged human rights abuses during Aquino and Duterte administrations. A stalwart of human rights, he was undaunting in upholding the constitutional mandate of the CHR.”The IBP expressed its condolences to Gascon’s family.

Banks told to leverage on technologyMANILA, Philippines — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has directed banks and financial institutions to leverage on technology in the submission of prudential reports as part of efforts to further enhance the supervision of all stakeholders in the industry. “This memorandum aims to provide information on the general requirements to migrate to API-based submission and enable banks to plan and prepare the necessary resources for the API adoption,” Fonacier said. Fonacier said the migration to API-based submission would be implemented in phases based on the readiness of banks in recognition of the varied stages of information technology maturity of banks. “The BSP shall closely coordinate with banks and industry associations to facilitate the migration process and build awareness and capacity on this initiative,” she said. According to the central bank, banks that are not yet capable to migrate to API-based submission of prudential reports are allowed to submit through the web-based platform providing single access point for a defined time period.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte catches COVID-19MANILA, Philippines — Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has tested positive for COVID-19, the city government announced Saturday. In a statement, the office of the Davao City mayor said the presidential daughter has mild symptoms and is isolating. "She [Duterte-Carpio] has mild symptoms and is in isolation caring for other family members who need medical attention in Davao City," the statement read. It did not mention whether the mayor had close contact with her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, in the last 14 days. On October 2, the Davao City mayor filed for reelection before the Commission on Elections.
