In a choked up voice, Jones reflected on the “hurt” that Black women who had turned out for the vice president were experiencing. “They thought tomorrow morning they’re going to be able to walk out there with their shoulders back, maybe able to breathe for the first time, to feel like they belong someplace. There are going to be people tomorrow, we’re going to be handing clothes at the dry cleaners to people who don’t have papers. And they’re going to be terrified tonight.”“It’s easy to blow this off and say, ‘oh the elites, they’re going to get their comeuppance,'” Jones said. It’s the people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare.”

MATT EGAN: Yeah, John. JOHN BERMAN: Look, I think you’re on to something here that what Wall Street was most nervous about was uncertainty. PATCHOGUE, N.Y. -- Incumbent Republican Rep. Nick LaLota has fended off Democratic challenger John Avlon in New York's Congressional District 1 race, CBS News projects. I brought home $150 million to Suffolk County. Suffolk County wants a common-sense conservative who tells the truth on the issues that matter." How, in the first place, did Democrats, and progressives generally, allow the welfare of average Americans to stagnate and decline? Our system of political economy has greatly narrowed policy options, and Democratic leadership has not been willing to challenge the system. In other words, half the pie has already been eaten, and average Americans have been greatly weakened in the slicing up of what’s left. But there is an honorable and honest path forward, and I hope the Democrats will use it as part of their strategy. History, we must believe, will be on the side of those who stand for real answers to real challenges.

Gen Z is known for being outspoken, especially on issues like climate change, social justice, and economic fairness. By using a straightforward, policy-heavy message with a no-nonsense tone, Trump’s campaign went after a more conservative slice of Gen Z. Was Targeting Gen Z the Right Call? While Gen Z turnout was strong, the results suggest that campaigns need a wider approach to reach the finish line. “Trump’s Strategy to Court Gen Z Voters in 2024 Election.” The Intercept, 4 Oct. 2024, https://theintercept.com/2024/10/04/trump-gen-z-election-strategy/.

From my perspective on election night at 10 here in Kansas, that’s the takeaway from a day of voting that didn’t produce much in the way of thundering progressive results in Kansas — or anywhere else, really. I wrote about a multitude of encouraging shifts and promising signs in Kansas over recent months. The vibes the progressives clung to over the past few months — at least since Harris entered the presidential race — appear to be nothing more than vibes. Perhaps one day that will change and a progressive, idealistic wave of hope will sweep across the nation. Through its opinion section, Kansas Reflector works to amplify the voices of people who are affected by public policies or excluded from public debate.

It was an image — or rather, a mirage — Trump had been cultivating for decades: the role of the successful, competent businessman. In the closing days of his third consecutive presidential campaign, Trump’s performance revealed new lows even for him. During that debate, and throughout her campaign, Harris often used Trump’s own words to illustrate the clear differences between them. Somehow, after decades of the Trump show, enough voters still rejected the evidence of their own eyes and ears, choosing to believe the fraudulent image Trump has been selling — as fraudulent as his failed business ventures. Instead of winding down, the Trump show enters its darkest and grimmest episode yet.
