Diplomats thought both Israel and Hezbollah supported a call for a temporary cease-fire. Then Israel killed Hezbollah’s leader, Mr. Nasrallah. Officials from the United Nations, France and the United States had drafted a statement calling for a three-week cease-fire aimed at preventing a broader conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, and shared it with the two sides to consider. Now the expanded war in Lebanon that officials had been working to prevent is threatening to ignite a larger regional conflict. The killing of Mr. Nasrallah was the second time in 10 weeks that Israel had quashed progress toward a cease-fire by striking a militia leader.

Israel intensified its fight on two fronts Sunday, stepping up operations against Hamas in Gaza and carrying out more airstrikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon, as the region braced for Israel to hit back at Iran for its barrage of ballistic missiles last week. The Israeli military appeared to label the vast majority of northern Gaza as an evacuation zone in what it said was preparation for “a new phase” in the war. In Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut. A year after the Oct. 7 attacks, Israel is now simultaneously engaged in ground and air offensives against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in northern Gaza. As Israel weighs potential targets in Iran, President Biden said last week that the United States would not support an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites.

California’s EV Rules Reduce Truck Sales by 50 PercentThe Wall Street Journal reports You Can’t Buy That Diesel Truck. Trouble is, truckers aren’t buying electric big rigs because they can’t afford them even with $40,000 in federal tax credits. Electric trucks cost twice as much as diesel-powered rigs and have a limited driving range—150 miles on average, compared to between 1,000 and 1,500 for diesel trucks. Yet under California’s rules, “dealers are restricted from selling a diesel truck unless they sell a ZEV truck,” the dealer group reports.
