A Los Angeles Times editorial is asking for a "do over" in the plastic bag ban that actually led to more plastic waste, according to a recent report. In fact, the study finds, the total amount of trash from plastic bags that California sends to landfills has never been higher . A "loophole" allowed businesses to offer thicker "reusable" plastic bags at checkout for a small fee, but many consumers threw those out after a single use as well. In 2014, California tossed about 157,385 tons of plastic bag waste into the trash. The problem, they claim, was fueled by the pandemic, when the plastic bag ban was suspended because of sanitary concerns.

Many eligible items are already on sale, and saving an extra 8% in tax is a great deal. On large purchases, especially for families with several children, it can be a big savings. It’s not worth fighting the packed parking lots and crowded stores to save $8 on $100. There are too many ineligible items on the tax-exempt list. It depends on how well back-to-school shopping goes in the meantime.

When Sam Watson set a speed climbing world record of 4.75 seconds in the Parisian suburbs, where a temporary climbing wall has been installed for the Olympics, he became the owner of a unique sporting accolade. “That’s a cool title, no one can take that away I suppose.”For those spectating at a speed climbing event, a moment’s distraction can prove costly. Watson set the previous speed climbing world record of 4.79 seconds at a World Cup event in China earlier this year, before Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo matched that time in Tuesday’s heats. “But I did go a lot faster in practice and I did have the idea that it was possible [to get a world record]. Speed climbing is considered a different skill to lead and bouldering, and mastering all three is a near-impossible task.
