Ethiopian police announced the arrest on Tuesday of a former minister accused of "collaborating" with Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebels. Taye Dendea, former Minister Delegate for Peace, had posted on his Facebook account on Monday a letter from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, informing him of his ouster from the government. An OLA member "who used three different identities was also found hiding in (the minister's) residence and was arrested", the police added. More than 50 civilians were killed in attacks in the Oromia region in November, according to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The Oromo region is plagued by multi-faceted violence, making the situation extremely confusing: internal political struggles, territorial disputes, and animosities between communities, combined with the recent development of armed banditry.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopia’s peace minister has been fired and arrested for having alleged links to an outlawed rebel group after he made a series of social media posts criticizing the government. The statement was published alongside several photos showing firearms, identity documents, mobile phones and OLA flags that police said were seized from Taye’s home. Taye, an ethnic Oromo, is a senior member of the ruling party, but has grown increasingly critical of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Last week Taye blamed the government for the failure of recent peace talks with the OLA and condemned a decision to ban an opposition rally in Addis Ababa, the capital. More than 50 civilians have been killed in the region since the breakup of last month’s peace talks, according to a state-appointed human rights commission.

In a separate statement issued in connection with the 23rd anniversary of the signing of the agreement, both US and EU reiterated their support for the Agreement and encouraged “Ethiopia and Eritrea to work together, in the spirit of the peace they forged, toward a more stable and prosperous region”. “In 2018, in a historic peace agreement, both countries recommitted to respect the borders as established. In June 2018, however, Ethiopia fully accepted the Algiers Agreement, which paved the way for the restoration of relations between the two countries and enabling them to fight alongside each other during the two years long Tigray war. The relations started to sour following the signing of the Pretoria peace agreement that ended the Tigray war. Despite provisions of the agreement the Eritrean forces remain inside Ethiopia’s territory.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in Texas upheld the state’s TikTok ban on official devices and networks, rejecting a challenge brought by an organization that claimed the restrictions violated the First Amendment. In light of those concerns, dozens of states, Congress and many universities across the country have taken steps to restrict the use of TikTok on official devices. Jameel Jaffer, the Knight Institute’s executive director who argued for the preliminary injunction before Judge Pitman last month, said in a statement that the decision was disappointing. In the decision, Pitman noted the state’s TikTok ban on official devices is narrow compared to efforts in Montana to ban the app state-wide. A federal judge blocked Montana’s blanket ban in late November, just a month before it was set to take effect.

The Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is having a severe impact on the Palestinian economy, the World Bank said Tuesday, adding that a sharp economic contraction is likely this year and next. Beyond the immediate human cost, the Israel-Hamas conflict has also "severely impacted the Palestinian economy," the World Bank said. Gaza's contribution to the overall Palestinian economy, which includes the West Bank, had already shrunk from around 36 percent in 2005 to just 17 percent last year, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. By contrast, consumer inflation in the West Bank rose by just 0.1 percent over the same period.
