General Assembly resolutions are not binding but carry political weight and reflect global views on the war in the Gaza Strip, as health authorities in the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave say the death toll from Israel's offensive had passed 18,000. The assembly vote comes a day after 12 Security Council envoys visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, the only place where limited humanitarian aid and fuel deliveries have crossed into Gaza. No country has a veto in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly set to vote on a Gaza truce. The length and intensity of Israel's operations in Gaza have left many UN members convinced that a ceasefire is essential," Gowan said. The draft General Assembly resolution to be voted on on Tuesday also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and that the warring parties comply with international law, specifically with regard to the protection of civilians.

Finland's government says it will reopen two crossings on its long border with Russia later this week after closing all eight roads between the two countries in late November to prevent an influx of asylum seekers. "Without dismantling the restrictions, we cannot verify whether a change for the better is taking place. If the phenomenon continues, we will close these border crossing points," Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told a press conference.

NAIROBI (Reuters) -Ethiopia's state minister of peace has been fired and arrested on accusations he conspired with rebel groups to overthrow the government, state media reported on Tuesday. Last week Taye blamed the government for the failure of a second round of peace talks between Ethiopia and the rebel group Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), which took place in Tanzania last month. Taye was not available for comment and the family had not yet engaged a lawyer, his wife said. After he was sacked, Taye lashed out at Abiy calling the prime minister "a barbarian" who plays with "human blood". The conflict in Oromiya in recent years has killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands in Ethiopia's most populous region.

Ethiopian Tigist Assefa has been crowned as a ‘World Athlete of the Year’ by the international body governing international athletics. Tigist is one of six athletes to receive the honor, along with Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon. The 27-year-old Tigist shattered the world record by an astounding two minutes and 14 seconds, marking the most significant improvement on the record in four decades. To put this achievement in perspective, only seven women throughout the year managed to surpass this time in a standalone half marathon. World Athletics, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations, has been the international governing body for athletics since 1912.

Taye Dendea Aredo served as a state minister of peace since October 2022 (Photo: Ministry of Peace)Addis Abeba – PM Abiy Ahmed has sacked Taye Dendea, state minister of Peace effective immediately in a letter issued on 11 December 2023. The letter, which is posted on a verified facebook page of Taye Dendea, fails short of explaining the reason underlying the decision, but thanked the now ex-state minister for his contribution during his tenure since 08 October 2021. This comes in the backdrop of unprecedented recent media engagement and social media posts by Taye Dendea where he made stern remarks criticizing the PM Abiy led government. Reacting to the letter of his termination Taye Dendea described the PM as a “barbarian who plays with human blood”. Taye has been critical of his own government and the ruling party particularly the administration of the Oromia regional state from where he hails and was elected as member of the Caffee, regional parliament.
