ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- A high ranking Ethiopian official attending a manufacturing sector development-themed conference in Ethiopia has called for innovative solutions to exploit the country's potential in the sector. This came during the UN Development Program (UNDP)'s 2023 Annual Development Conference, which was held under the theme "Can Ethiopia Become a Manufacturing Powerhouse" on Friday, explored Ethiopia's likelihood of transitioning from trading to manufacturing. "Industrial development is at the center of Ethiopia's development policy. Noting conducive and enabling economic environment as well as good governance are key elements in attracting investments and formatting trade, Bululta said the Ethiopian government has created an enabling environment and policy frameworks to support the sector. UNDP's working paper on the manufacturing sector that was presented during the conference noted that Ethiopia has considerable potential to become a manufacturing power, able to export 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2030, and create many thousands of jobs.

Ethiopian gov't, UNICEF ink accord to foster strategic refugee response collaboration
ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen strategic collaboration pertaining to refugees and Ethiopian returnees. The memorandum of understanding agreement (MOU), which was signed between the Ethiopian Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) and UNICEF, envisaged strengthening the two sides' collaboration in protecting and supporting refugees and Ethiopian returnees in the country, according to a joint press statement issued late Friday. The accord aimed to improve access to essential services including education, healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as child protection, social protection and education for refugees, Ethiopian returnees and other vulnerable communities, it said. The agreement also aimed to promote self-reliance and integration, strengthen protection systems and advocate for the rights of refugees and Ethiopian returnees, according to the joint statement. "This MoU is a significant step forward in our efforts to protect and support refugees and Ethiopian returnees in Ethiopia.

FSD Ethiopia CEO Ermias Eshetu to Step Down – Ethiopian Monitor
1 min readADDIS ABABA – Ermias Eshetu is stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Ethiopia after two years at the agency and FSD Africa. On Thursday, FSD Ethiopia said Ermias informed its Board of his decision to resign as CEO “to pursue other interests”. The Board plans to initiate the process of finding a new CEO “in the coming weeks,” according to FSD Ethiopia. Its Chair Admassu Tadesse has extended the Board of FSD Ethiopia’s appreciation of Ermias “for his energy and dedication in bringing FSD Ethiopia into existence”. Prior to that, Ermias held the position of CEO at the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) for three years until the end of 2017.
