Morgenthau defined power broadly: “anything that establishes and maintains control of man over man.” This includes force, persuasion, and prestige. Morality Through Power, Not Against ItCarr’s most unsettling idea is that morality itself is born from power. “Law and morality in international politics,” he wrote, “are functions of power.” The powerful define norms because they can. The loss of trust, as seen in the 2008 financial crisis, is ultimately a collapse of power, the power to assure continuity. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a realist project disguised as an idealist one; it is turning solidarity into bargaining power.

Gabon were tipped to compete for the top honours in Group F before the tournament began, but the Panthers instead are heading home after suffering two defeats from two. Having entered AFCON 2025 with a 15-match winless run at the continental showpiece, the Mambas’ loss to Ivory Coast extended that sequence to 16 matches; however, it changed against Gabon on Sunday when both teams played out a five-goal thriller. Not helped by falling 2–0 and 3–1 behind, Mouyouma’s team could not secure the draw needed to keep them alive entering the final round of matches. Aiming to take advantage of an eliminated opponent, Fae’s men head into Wednesday having not suffered a loss in six matches at the Cup of Nations, a streak stretching back to the previous tournament. While there might have been pre-AFCON 2023 pressure as hosts, Fae took over mid-tournament with the Elephants only just squeaking through as one of the leading third-placed teams.

Lower global prices for refined fuels have reduced import costs, while the stronger local currency has alleviated exchange-rate pressures that typically influence domestic fuel pricing. Market leader Star Oil reduced petrol prices to GH¢11.35 per litre from GH¢11.97, while diesel fell to GH¢12.45 per litre, with some outlets offering even lower promotional prices. International outlet TotalEnergies followed suit, cutting petrol prices to GH¢12.50 per litre from GH¢12.69 and diesel to GH¢12.99 from GH¢13.22. Despite the positive outlook, fuel pricing remains sensitive to movements in the cedi and global oil market dynamics. Any renewed currency pressure or rebound in international oil prices could limit the scope for further cuts.
