Five Chinese illegal miners arrested as NAIMOS cracks down along Birim river

The suspects were apprehended while actively mining and washing mineral materials directly into the Birim River, causing significant environmental harm. That day, August 6, 2025, became a Black Wednesday that violently snuffed out the lives of 8 illustrious Ghanaians – politicians and soldiers of the Ghana Armed Forces. On the day, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board. During the state funeral for the 8 perished Ghanaians on August 15, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama described the loss from the helicopter crash as a "national tragedy."

Reduced state payments offset ECG revenue gains – IMF

The increase was attributed to the reduction in direct government payments, which created a funding gap that improved ECG performance could not fill. It reported that while debts to fuel suppliers declined by US$124 million, they remained high at US$830 million. The government has allocated GH¢15 billion in the 2026 Budget to cover projected energy sector shortfalls in addition to legacy debt payments.
