Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse, the 36th set of brothers to play for the Springboks, will be the halfbacks for the team’s last Test of the year against Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday. Scrumhalf Jaden and flyhalf Jordan are the first set of brothers to appear together since Dan and Robert du Preez featured against Wales in Washington DC at the start of the 2018 season. The last time a set of brothers were included in the starting team was in the Rugby World Cup pool match against Scotland in 2015, when front-rowers Jannie and Bismarck du Plessis ran out in tandem in Newcastle. Loose forward Cameron Hanekom is set to become the 12th Springbok to make his Test debut this season after being named among the substitutes in a match-23 that shows seven changes to the team that beat England 29-20 in London on Saturday. He will become the 51st player to be used by the Boks this year.

High Court reportersThe State has lodged an appeal against a High Court decision holding that the failure to provide for the basic needs of homeless asylum seekers is a breach of their fundamental rights. The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) on Tuesday confirmed the State’s appeal was lodged with the Court of Appeal. Lawyers for the State-funded IHREC last month complained to the High Court that the Government had failed to address the points made in the August judgment. IHREC’s case, brought on behalf of a cohort of homeless asylum seekers, followed on from a High Court decision delivered in April of last year which found the State breached its obligations to accommodate an Afghan asylum seeker. IHREC’s subsequent case contended the €113.80 weekly allowance was still insufficient as it did not enable the men to source alternative shelter.

The greatest excess mortality in multiple myeloma (MM) is in older patients, Prof Graham Jackson, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals, Newcastle, UK, told the Haematology Association of Ireland 2024 Annual Meeting. Prof Jackson gave an insightful talk about controversial issues in the initial therapy of MM, with a focus on risk factors for poorer treatment outcomes. Describing “other things to think about when assessing risk”, Prof Jackson said that beta-2 microglobulin “remains consistently important”, alongside lactate dehydrogenase, albumin, and cytogenetics. “It [elevated beta-2 microglobulin] is still one of the highest driving factors of poorer outcomes,” he said. He demonstrated poorer outcomes associated with those over 65 and discussed alternative options for transplant ineligible patients, such as quadruple therapy.

The talk was given by Mr Jonathan Poots, Consultant Neurological Surgeon, the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Mr Poots pointed out that multiple specialties, not only surgeons, are involved in the management of these conditions. “The character of the pain may change with the use of neuropathic pain medications and have more of a constant character,” Mr Poots said. Mr Poots described MVD as a “satisfying operation”, with a number of positive aspects. “MVD offers the only chance for a non-destructive procedure and a more durable result,” according to Mr Poots.

Ms Murphy delivered a talk titled ‘Life Under the Knife’ to illustrate the need to view each patient differently, including different scarring reactions to surgical procedures. Ms Murphy briefly described how wounds are classified, and outlined the phases of wound healing. She also discussed hypertrophic scars as “the next level” in scarring: “The difference between keloids and hypertrophic scarring is, the hypertrophic scars are angry, bubbly, and itchy, but they will settle down in time. One of the research objectives going forward is to understand why this happens, said Ms Murphy. “This will further grow our level of engagement with Ms Murphy in terms of research collaboration,” said Prof Tobin.
