Lofa County – Some farmers in Lofa County have called for an alternative livelihood since restriction has been placed on deforestation of land they used for agricultural activities. Under its Reducing of Emission of Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) plan, occupants of reserved forest areas are to be provided means of alternative livelihood including substantial farming. According to Howard, since restriction was placed on farmers from using the reserved forest, nothing has been done by the FDA to support residents to do sustainable farming. These promises, according to him, were the reasons why residents chose to leave the proposed reserved forest. This project accordingly is intended to train the affected community dwellers on how to carry out sustainable farming as a way of discouraging deforestation.

In July 2019, Ms. Cuffy-Brown single-handedly signed a 10-year agreement with AXHIS Liberia, an investor-owned, for-profit corporation engaged in development of affordable housing units. The contract, among other things, specifies that AXHIS would construct 50,000 housing units. AXHIS Liberia has now resolved to engaged the National Investment Commission (NIC) to investment incentives in order for it to carry on projects. Ms. Cuffy’s contract with the AXHIS Liberia is a remake of an earlier contract with GELPAZ for the construction of 50,000 housing units. Ironically, the investors who formed GELPAZ came back to Liberia re-registered the company under AXHIS Liberia with the same terms of agreement.

Many of the policy statements that have been made by Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah to ensure adherence to the health protocol are mere lip service. THE FLAGRANT DISREGARD FOR THE HEALTH protocol by politicians while the MOH turn a blind eye is a complete mockery to the country’s response against the pandemic. Dr. Jallah must do the needful by working with the National Elections Commission to develop a public health protocol that will set the standard for political parties to follow. The rest of the world is watching the honesty of our COVID-19 response efforts. A rigid COVID-19 protocol that will be binding on all political actors must introduce the soonest.
