And to reverse this, Girls for Change is urging government, education stakeholders, parents, students and the entire country to work together for the return of all kids to school and a special emphasis must be placed on girls children too.

The Rainbow Alliance Gets NEC Authorization, Frowns on Breaches to the Liberian Constitution
Monrovia – The Rainbow Alliance (RA) comprising the largest group of registered political parties in Liberia has been granted authorization by the National Elections Commission (NEC) to operate as a single political institution pending the certification process. The general public is hereby assured of the commitment of the Rainbow Alliance to work for meaningful changes in the governance structure of Liberia and the livelihood of ordinary Liberians. 2020 ReferendumThe official Gazette of the pending 2020 Referendum is in gross violation of Article 92 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia. The Rainbow Alliance therefore gives notice that it will vigorously campaign for a NO VOTE in the Referendum for Dual Citizenship. The Rainbow Alliance is confident that the National Elections Commission is aware of these breaches to the constitution and elections laws and will move rapidly to remedy the situation under the law and under the Inter-party Consultative Committee framework.

Monrovia – The Ministry of National Defense (MOD) spent US5.8 million between fiscal years 2013/2014 to 2016/2017 without supporting documents such as payment vouchers, requests, invoices, quotations, delivery notes etc. to authenticate the expenditure, audit report released by the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to the National Legislature says. Further, the GAC report says the Ministry of National Defense Management did not -maintain fuel/gasoline distribution logs for the fuel/gasoline procured in the amount of US$ 4.3 million. However, the GAC report says management only remitted US$3,965.33 to NASSCORP.

MONROVIA – The Senate ad-hoc committee chaired by Senator Alphonso Gaye (UP-Grand Gedeh County) which was charged with the responsibility to investigate staffer complaint of salary deduction has called for an independent audit of the Senate staffer payroll. Mr. Gaye said he believes the payroll submitted is a scam. The ad-hoc committee observed disparity in the Senate staffer payroll and salary allotment. “We also observed disparity in the payroll where employees of the same status are making more than their colleagues in other departments. According to the committee’s report, the additional envelop will restore staffers to their previous position before the harmonization.

Human Rights Organizations in Liberia Alarm Over Being Targeted by Government’s Security, Call for Protection
Monrovia – At least nine human rights organizations have called on the Government of Liberia to ensure that human rights defenders in Liberia are protected from harassment and threats by individuals within the Government security services. They include the Center for Justice and Accountability, Centre for Civil and Political Rights, Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform, Civitas Maxima, Human Rights Watch, Independent Human Rights Investigators, Advocates for Human Rights and the Global Justice and Research Project as well as Aaron Weah, a researcher. Also in the statement, the groups stated that credible threats have also been made against Adama Dempster, secretary general of the Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia, in connection to his human rights work and advocacy for a war crimes court. The Government of Liberia has an obligation to protect human rights defenders, the groups said. The groups also reminded the Government of Liberia of the United Nations Human Rights Committee’s Concluding Observations, issued in 2018.
