On Tuesday, August 4, dozens of Muslims holding a large banner and placards, gathered at the Capitol to petition the 54th Legislature. In the petition read by the spokesperson, Ayouba Swaray, the group stated that while there are several nationally celebrated Christian holidays in Liberia, there is not a single holiday dedicated to Muslims. The practice of denying Muslims national holidays, the group says violates their constitutional rights and a disregard to Muslim faith, nationality, and commitment to the overall development of Liberia. – The Movement for Islamic Holidays in LiberiaThe group’s petition has the propensity to reawaken a debate about whether Liberia is a secular or Christian state. Monrovia – Former Central Bank Governor Milton Weeks says the Legislature consulted and instructed CBL to replace mutilated banknotes during his tenure at the Central Bank of Liberia and that only L$10 billon was printed and not L$15 billion as alleged by state prosecutors. Weeks testified that the L$5 billion printed was inadequate to fully replace all of the mutilated banknotes. The former CBL Governor continued that the previous printer of the Liberian banknotes was a French Company. At that point, the CBL contacted two other reputable banknotes printing companies – Rue and Crane Currency – and based on the price and delivery options the CBL chose Crane Currency. By 2017, Weeks added that the CBL officials were summoned on numerous occasions to explain to the Legislature what the CBL was doing to correct this situation.

UBA is providing $200 million (Naira equivalent) to support investment growth and liquidity requirements. The first tranche of $1 billion, to be repaid over a period of five years, will be provided in dollars, with UBA acting as the Facility Agent Bank. The second tranche of $500 million, will be provided in local currency, over seven years, with UBA acting as Lead Bank, providing $200 million in Naira equivalent. Liberia: Legislative Staff Plan to Disrupt Pres. Senator Chie had given the committee five days to investigate the staffers’ complaints and present a report. Mr. Charles Brown, the spokesman of the legislative staff, gave House Speakers Chambers 24 hours to return all the benefits taken from staffers under the Government’s salary harmonization program.
