New York – The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission and International Partners of the Republic of Liberia have indicated overwhelming willingness and expression of support to the Government and People of Liberia for Liberia’s National Response to COVID-19. She reaffirmed that the International Partners and United Nations stand in solidarity with the Government and People of Liberia in this difficult situation. He indicated that the United States hopes the UN Peacebuilding Commission can leverage its advisory role to support further coordination across these efforts. He also stressed and offered support to ensure support for food security in the midst of the challenging COVID-19 should the Government of Liberia express the need. He reaffirmed the commitment and support of ECOWAS to the Government and People of Liberia in fighting COVID-19; a support which he said already started.

ALJA in a press release issued on May 6, 2020, condemned in the strongest term Cllr Cephas’ threats against the media; and called on Liberians at home and abroad to speak out against pronouncements and political actions that are meant to cow the Liberian media into submission. ALJA says the Solicitor General’s threats are intended to intimidate and silence the Liberian media. ALJA says threats against Journalists from the Solicitor General and others could further explain the recent wave of physical assaults against Liberian journalists by members of the security forces for which a Presidential Commission was recently established to investigate. The Association further noted that the Liberian media has ethical and professional obligations to ensure that political leaders in the country are held accountable in keeping with the rule of law and the principles of democracy. The executive committee resolved to use a play-off of the top four teams in the first division in the event the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requests a representative from Liberia for the (CAF) Champions League. Players and or coaches, who had contracts with clubs, including those whose contracts were due to end at the end of the 2019/2020 season, will start anew. The executive committee’s decisions were discussed with clubs at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on May 5. Turning over the Items, the UN Women Country Representative, Marie Goreth, congratulated the head of the National Response Team for being nominated by President Weah. Madam Goreth affirmed that women, girls and children are the pillar groups in the fight against COVID-19. The donated items will be distributed by the COVID-19 National Response to the targeted groups along with their heads for the purpose of accountability and transparency, said the minister.
