It was first described in a scientific paper in 1933 and is known as Libyan desert glass. But none are as rich in silica as Libyan desert glass, nor are they found in such large lumps and quantities. One polymorph of ZrO2 that we observed in Libyan desert glass is called cubic zirconia – the kind seen in some jewellery as a synthetic replacement for diamonds. Such pressure and temperature conditions provided us with the proof for the meteorite impact origin of the glass. They are too far and too small to be considered the parental craters for such massive amounts of impact glass, all concentrated in one spot.

DUBAI: Fifty oil and gas companies representing 40% of global production pledged to decarbonise their operations by 2050 at the UN’s COP28 climate talks in Dubai today. “Whilst many national oil companies have adopted net-zero 2050 targets for the first time, I know that they and others, can and need to do more,” Jaber said. Unlike the Western oil majors, which are intensely scrutinised by the public, few large national oil companies had announced such targets. PetroChina and Brazil’s Petrobras also signed up to the new accord, named the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter. The National Oil Company of Libya, Malaysia’s Petronas and Sonangol of Angola were also among the signatories, along with France’s TotalEnergies, US firm ExxonMobil, and Britain’s BP and Shell.

Inaugurated in 2016, it was still among the newest projects in the Gaza Strip, the housing complex in the city of Khan Yunis boasting an impressive mosque, shops and gardens. On Saturday it happened again, a day after a Qatar-brokered pause in the current war between Israel and Hamas expired. The Hamas-led Gaza Strip government says Israel’s campaign has killed more than 15,000 people, also mostly civilians, since it was launched eight weeks ago. Mohammed Foura, 21, already displaced once from Gaza City, told AFP that half an hour before the strike he had been warned by other residents to flee. “They told us ‘Gaza City is a war zone’, now it’s Khan Yunis,” he said.

Following the European Union's sanctions notice, Niger has opted to repeal a law sanctioning illegal border crossings, and a major surge in migration flows is expected, with the focus on Tunisia and Libya. The Prime Minister's spokesman, Ali Al-Amin Zein, announced that the leader of the military junta, Abderrahmane Tiani, had repealed this law. REUTERS/JOE PENNEY - Nigerian migrants, travelling north towards Libya, ride on top of a truck in AgadezAlgeria is precisely one of the countries that motivated the 2015 law sanctioning illegal migrants.
