The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.69%, while the S&P 500 edged down 0.11%, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 1.5%. The buoyancy in the Dow was mirrored in stock markets elsewhere, with Europe's STOXX 600 index also inching up to an all-time high, as mining stocks leapt on record copper prices. By midday, the dollar index had pared earlier losses but still held at a 2-1/2-month low of 90.153. The focus now shifts to US consumer price data due on Wednesday, which will help investors determine whether they need to scale back their inflation expectations even further. In the cryptocurrency market, ether rose to a fresh record above US$4,000 and was last up 6.3%.

(Reuters) - Seven times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton hopes to agree a new contract with Mercedes before the sport's August break. The 36-year-old Briton is out of contract at the end of this season, after his latest one-year extension was announced only in February, but has said he plans to continue. It ruined my whole winter and I’m sure it wasn’t helpful for Toto’s," said the championship leader, referring to team boss Toto Wolff. We still have 19 races to do but it would be great to get something in place before the break." Wolff said on May 1 that he hoped to start contract talks soon after Hamilton, now 14 points clear of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, signalled he was keen to continue racing.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 10): Mohd Rezuan Othman would normally travel from Kuala Lumpur to his hometown in southern Malaysia to spend Eid al-Fitr with his family, but the country's latest nationwide Covid-19 lockdown has scuppered his plans for the second year in a row. Under measures announced on Monday, just days before Eid, he and millions of others are being forced to stay apart from loved ones during the annual celebration because of strict restrictions on travel. Malaysia was among the earliest countries in the region to impose a strict lockdown last year to keep the epidemic contained. But beyond the disruption of social lives, the repeated lockdowns have become a threat to the livelihoods of Mohd Rezuan and many others in Malaysia. One moment it's open, one moment it's closed," said Mohd Rezuan, speaking during a break from his work at a restaurant in a normally busy suburb of Kuala Lumpur, now unnaturally quiet.

The lottery I meant was the chance to get one of the 268,000 AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccination slots that had been up for grabs for KLites and Selangorians on May 2. That fatefuI day, I woke up to find several of my WhatsApp chat groups sharing the link for the voluntary opt-in of the somewhat controversial vaccine. But, back to the AZ vaccine. But, in all honesty, I was really okay about getting any vaccine — yes, even the made-in-China one. Now, I have to wait for the next round of the AZ lottery, as promised by our vaccination minister.

(May 10): There are few places in the world easier to get a Covid-19 vaccine than Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, so many shots are languishing that the government has warned people that some will expire in September. The situation is making Hong Kong a conspicuous global outlier. Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive Eddie Yue said the city’s low vaccination rate could make international firms question whether to set up base here. A travel bubble with Singapore scheduled for the end of the month will also only be opened to vaccinated Hong Kong residents.

Business people know well that keeping accounts when doing business is essential. Certainly, they had no account of their paddy business. But I suspect that many Malay small businesses keep no record of what they spend and what they make from their business. And of course, the money that they earn in the course of doing business must be recorded. But if it becomes a habit to record the money earned and spent, the person would become aware when he is overspending.

When I started private practice in 1994, I felt that it was an honour if a colleague or another doctor chose to consult me. If the doctor had medical insurance and the procedure was covered by insurance, I would then charge for the procedure in full. I rarely charge hospital staff for outpatient consultations, not even the ultrasound fee. You must understand that just because you did not charge a doctor for your services once, the doctor is not indebted to send patients to you forever. A colleague who runs his own IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) centre, once asked me how I charge doctors who consult me for IVF treatment.
