The emergence of Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, as Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CCECC), is destined by God, the deputy governor, Ahmed Ketso, has said. At a special prayer session for the governor, organised by the Commissioners’ Forum at Government House, Minna, on Tuesday, Ketso commended cabinet members for offering the prayer for the governor’s new national assignment. Ketso noted that the governor did not lobby for the national assignment. “Bello’s elevation as the CCECC chairman is an act of God. But God is always with someone that has pure heart,” Ketso asserted.

WORLD Health Organization (WHO) has said that climate change has more direct and indirect health consequences on women and girls, including the interruption of health services. According to her, “Due to their gender, they bear a disproportionate burden of the effects of climate change in their social and reproductive roles. “Such extreme events also have direct and indirect health repercussions for women and girls, including the interruption of health services. “Addressing the health impacts of climate change requires innovative thinking and a more holistic, population-based public health approach. As WHO, we are providing guidance and technical support to governments to ensure that health and environmental responses, including climate change strategies, are integrated, equitable and just.

He explained that sometime in 2010 when he was not making enough sales, he had to sublet part of the shop to a third party with a view to enabling him to pay the shop rent and as well boosting his business. He added that the person subsequently invited the police to evict him from the shop as he (Orjiakor) was an illegal occupant. Orjiakor told the panel that despite this, the police came to arrest him the second time on February 8, 2022, adding that this time he was subjected to torture and degrading treatment. He, therefore, urged the panel to order compensation be paid to him to assuage the degrading treatment he received at the hands of the police. Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) President, Uyi Akpata, has revealed that the country’s groundsmen will soon begin consulting for countries like Ghana and Sierra Leone. Akpata commended the groundsmen for doing an excellent job in constructing and maintaining cricket pitches around the country, saying the feat has drawn the admiration of neighbouring nations. “Our groundsmen used the COVID-19 period to gain more experience from a renowned ground official. We seized the opportunity to build our resources during the COVID-19 period. Against the backdrop of dwindling foreign reserves and biting economic realities, the lower chamber of the National Assembly again pushed to curb foreign medical trips by government officials. Yet, it is sad to note that these few working medical officials do not have a conducive environment. The public service rule also empowers public officials and their families to travel abroad for medical treatment. A number of public officeholders consistently continued to fly overseas for common ailments that cost the national purse a fortune.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia yesterday announced the lift of suspension of direct flights from 17 countries including Nigeria. Other affected countries are South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Malawi, Mauritius, Zambia, Madagascar, Angola, Seychelles, United Republic of Comoros, Ethiopia and Afghanistan. Also, the Saudi Government scrapped major COVID-19 restrictions except wearing of masks in the two holy Mosques in Makka and Medina as well as other places of worship in the kingdom. The directive, issued by Saudi Arabia Ministry of Interior, and confirmed by Saudi embassy in Nigeria, became effective from March 5, 2022. However, the new directive compel all new travelers to Saudi Arabia to secure an insurance that covers the costs of treatment from coronavirus infection.

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have denied allegation made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, over plans to destabilise the country. In a joint statement, the CSOs accused the minister of fabrication, saying:“Last month, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made an unfounded and false statement that some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were working to destabilise Nigeria. MRA leader, Ojo, said: “Nothing could be further from the truth than the minister’s wild claims and allegations,” saying: “We reject the allegation that SERAP and other NGOs that sued the Nigerian government are working to destabilise Nigeria or against the country’s interest. “We condemn the statement as a reckless attempt to incite Nigerians against NGOs and undermine their credibility. We wish to state that the opposite is actually true.

Onyechi Ikpeazu, the lawyer to Major General Jafaru Mohammed has threatened to sue a national daily for its reportage of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) case. The Army General currently works in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). Ikpeazu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said Mohammed’s image was damaged after the judgment of a Federal High Court was wrongly presented. “I observed that the name of General Jafaru Mohammed was never mentioned in the originating ex-parte application and the respondent (EFCC) did not rebut this fact. “It is clear General Jafaru is not on trial here and the Court has not been asked to decide his guilt or innocence in this case”, the judge said.
