While increased vaccine supply might offer hope in the short term, Africa needs to kickstart its local production as a long-term solution. The effect of such nationalism is an uneven distribution of the global vaccine supply. Despite the drastic shortage of vaccines in Africa, global vaccine output has been steadily increasing, at roughly 1.5 billion doses per month. A successful local vaccine production requires Africa to address a lack of financial resources, a knowledge gap, and standard regulatory bodies. Currently, only ten local vaccine value chain players are active.

President of COMTUA, Adeyinka Aroyewun, insisted that there must be an alternative to the TTP-operated electronic call-up, alleging that the system is incapable of handling the demands of the system. But the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Truck Transit Park Limited, Temidayo Adeboye, has described the call by truckers for the unbundling of the electronic call-up system as selfish. Adeboye also informed that many of the truck drivers are not tech-savvy and as such, they find it difficult to use the app. But the COMTUA President disagreed, saying the truckers group is calling for the total unbundling of the truck call-up system as well as a credible, sustainable and formidable alternative. Recall that COMTUA had last week threatened to withdraw its services from the port owing to alleged extortion and the inefficiency of the electronic call-up system.

We have failed to attain our full potential mainly due to bad choices in choosing some of our past leaders. “I encourage all Nigerians not to vote along religious, ethnic, and tribal lines come 2023, and youths must rise and save Nigeria. Referencing how world leaders use tribal sentiment to appeal to sectional support, Atuma contended that “weaponisation” of ethnicity is very much prevalent in Third World countries. Therefore, inefficient governance is a direct result and correlation of tribalism in Nigeria.”According to the Abia-born Atuma, tribalism contributed to the dearth of professional hands to build the nation. Let’s unite the centrifugal forces of Nigeria beyond ethnic and sectional sentiments in the choice of candidates into public office.
