Efforts to rein in fuel supply shock have failed, leading to endless queues at many retail outlets in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other cities. The crisis has worsened gridlocks in the metropolis with thousands of commuters stranded at bus stops. Triggered by the shortage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the cost of transportation, a key driver of inflation, has doubled or tripled in different cities. Amid prolonged crisis, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, yesterday, said 2.3 billion litres of additional PMS is being imported into the country to complement the existing one billion litres supply, as part of measures to address the scarcity. Adetunji assured that the ongoing efforts would be sustained to restore normalcy and urged Nigerians to avoid panic buying.

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), has signed a multi-sectoral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and launched the Implementation Manual, for operationalizing the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (MEMSAS) to rescue accident emergencies on the highways. “Emergency medical service is delivered along three operational pathways: coverage of highways and roads, mostly in collaborative partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps; coverage of Emergency within States and FCT, working in collaboration with respective authorities and involving domestic, workplace-related, assault and sports incidents. LAST Friday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dealt a major blow to a signature agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari, when it shot down Executive Order 10, ceding financial autonomy to state legislature and judiciary. In siding with the state governors who sued the president over the “gift” to the other arms of government in their respective domains, the apex court communicated two major messages to the executive leadership of the country. Uncharacteristically, Falana said, “Frankly speaking, Executive Order 10 on deduction of the funds for the judiciary from source is totally unnecessary. There was also Executive Order 4 which touched on what some also felt should be a lawmaking process, but arbitrarily birthed, by the executive arm. Interestingly, the state governors that went away from the Executive Order battle, feeling like the winner, are the real culprits in the denial of judiciary’s constitutional entitlements.

The trial is renewing scrutiny of Goldman’s role in the international scandal that led to a 12-year jail sentence for Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak. The scandal stems from some $6.5bn in bonds that Goldman helped 1MDB, launched by Razak to spur economic growth, sell from 2009 to 2014. US prosecutors say Goldman earned $600m in fees from the deals, but that about $4.5bn of the funds raised was embezzled. Ng received $35m in kickbacks from Leissner, Wible said. “Tim Leissner uses people,” Agnifilo told jurors, saying Leissner was “married to two different women at the same time, twice”.

Nigeria, the largest producer of cassava in the world, needs to adopt a new seed system approach to compete globally and keep the price of cassava-based foods stable and affordable in the country, experts have said. However, farmers in Nigeria produce less than 10 tons due to poor performing seeds,” Prof. Sanni said. We are encouraging farmers to adopt new and improved varieties to improve productivity, raise incomes of cassava growers and seed entrepreneurs, enhance gender equity, and contribute to inclusive agricultural transformation,” he added. According to the project’s Advocacy, Promotions and Outreach lead, Dr. Godwin Atser, “Improved varieties are key to changing that narrative of cassava. Adoption of improved varieties will increase cassava productivity, ensure food security, guarantee processors of quality raw materials, and hinder the spread of cassava crop diseases on farms.”Apart from its economic and sustainability elements, Dr Atser said that the BASICS model had a job creation component.
