Nigeria’s finance Zainab Ahmed minister Monday said the government has suspended the plan to remove fuel subsidy by the end of the first of 2022. Ahmed said the removal of the subsidy anytime this year may worsen inflationary trends in the country. President does not want to do that. What we are now doing is to continue with the ongoing discussions and consultations in terms of putting in place a number of measures. “We, therefore, need to return to the National Assembly to now amend the budget and make additional provision for subsidy from July 22 to whatever period that we agreed was suitable for the commencement of the total removal.”

The possible outlook of the Nigerian economy in 2022 has elicited comments from various stakeholders over the past few weeks. This is notwithstanding the effects of the ravaging Omicron variant of the COVID-19 pandemic in the global economy with the attendant uncertainty it has brought to the global economy, with the Nigerian economy not exempted from these. A government that intends to borrow over N5 trillion to partly finance its huge budget deficit, as implied in the 2022 budget document, should not be seen as wasteful at all. The usual monthly Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) where sharing is done regularly may not be the way forward for the Nigerian economy. Without adequate security, 2022 will be worse than 2021 in the performance of the economy particularly with the 2023 elections just months away.

Unseeded French veteran Alize Cornet upset Simona Halep at the Australian Open in brutal heat Monday to make her first Grand Slam quarter-final on her 63rd attempt. Both players struggled as the temperatures hit 33 Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) on Rod Laver Arena, but it was the 32-year-old who prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a gruelling 2hr 33min. She will now play 27th-seeded Danielle Collins for a place in the semis after the American outlasted Elise Mertens 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a near three-hour epic. The breakthrough has been a long time coming for Cornet, who made her Grand Slam debut at the French Open in 2005 but had never been past the fourth round before. With the ice-towels out to keep them cool, they pounded away from the baseline and it was Cornet who came out on top to break two-time Grand Slam winner Halep and move 5-3 clear.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has described the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) planned nationwide protest against fuel subsidy removal as unnecessary and misplaced priority. The NLC had fixed January 27 for its protest across the 36 states and a grand protest in Abuja over the planned fuel subsidy removal. He said: “In the 2022 budget, there is nothing like fuel subsidy. “But if the labour union is insisting on protest, that means they want the corruption involved in the payment of fuel subsidy to continue. There is a lot of unnecessary emphasis on fuel while Nigerians are suffering in other sectors,” he added.
